Mohamed Salah will not be representing Egypt at the Paris Olympic Games this summer.

Egypt wanted their top player as one of three players beyond the age of 23 for the forthcoming Olympics, which are scheduled to begin on Friday, July 26.

The Egyptian FA is had already accepted that Liverpool is not required to release Salah because the Olympic Games are not FIFA-mandated.

Furthermore, Salah himself is said to have given his blessing for the Reds to deny Egypt’s request as it is just too close to the start of the Premier League season.

Given that the men’s football competition at the Olympics begins on July 24 and concludes on August 9, only eight days before the Reds open their Premier League season away at Ipswich Town, it was not ideal to have such a key player essentially sidelined for the entirety of preseason.

And to be fair, Liverpool’s No.11 could use a good pre-season.

Salah picked up a hamstring tear during AFCON in January, and he did not return to his best form once he recovered.

Thus, plenty of minutes in the upcoming pre-season friendlies combined with all the time he’s had at the AXA should do him a world of good.

But unluckily for him, he’s set to miss out on what would be a major honour for any person proud of their country.

What will Mohamed Salah miss at the Paris Olympic Games?

Representing your country at the Olympic Games is among the top sporting achievements in the world.

Every Olympic Games begins with an opening ceremony that serves as a global introduction and welcome to each participating nation and its athletes.

And it has since been revealed that Egypt was planning on making Mohamed Salah the nation’s flag bearer for the ceremony.

“The flag bearer shouldn’t only be a football player, Salah is an exception due to his popularity in the country and worldwide and that’s why we were planning for him to do the honours if he was present,” head of Egypt’s Olympic committee Yasser Idris said as quoted by GOAL.

“Now it will be Sarah Samir (weightlifter) and Ahmed Gendi (modern pentathlon) because they both have won Olympic medals in the past.”

It would have been a moment of immense pride for Salah, who already serves as the captain of the Egypt football team.

Nonetheless, it should not affect him too much as he is away with the Liverpool squad in the USA and not sat on vacation watching the ceremony wishing it was him.
