Everton Football Club has added a towering figure from American sports to its ownership group, announcing Thursday that NBA Hall of Famer and Dallas Mavericks head coach Jason Kidd has joined Roundhouse Capital Holdings, part of The Friedkin Group that acquired the Premier League side in December 2024.
The move signals Everton’s ambition to leverage cross-sport expertise as they prepare for a new era that includes a move to their new 52,888-seat stadium in 2025.
For football fans unfamiliar with Kidd’s legacy, the 52-year-old is revered as one of the greatest point guards in basketball history.
Over a 19-year NBA career (1994–2013) his key career highlights include:
10-time NBA All-Star and 6-time All-NBA Team selection
2011 NBA Champion with the Dallas Mavericks
Second all-time in career assists (12,091) and steals (2,684)
Post-retirement, Kidd transitioned to coaching, leading the Brooklyn Nets, Milwaukee Bucks, and currently the Mavericks, whom he has guided to the 2024 NBA Finals.
Jason Kidd said of the news:
“I’m honoured to be joining Everton’s ownership at such an important moment: with a new stadium on the horizon and a bright future ahead, it’s a great moment to come on board.”
Everton Executive Chairman Marc Watts said: “On behalf of The Friedkin Group and the Everton Board of Directors, I am pleased to welcome Jason to our ownership group.”
“As one of the NBA’s greatest players and now a successful coach, his knowledge and winning mentality will be an incredible resource for Everton.
“He is a respected leader and household name for many sports fans and will bring a deeper understanding of high performance as we collectively strive to build a brighter future for this storied club.”
Kidd’s arrival follows a turbulent period for Liverpool’s Merseyside rivals.
After narrowly avoiding relegation in 2023/24, the club stabilized under returning manager David Moyes, climbing to 13th place.
The impending move to Bramley-Moore Dock stadium—a £750 million project—marks a symbolic fresh start, with Kidd’s NBA-style leadership expected to aid commercial growth and squad development.
His appointment also reflects a broader trend of American sports figures investing in English football.
NFL icon Tom Brady (Birmingham City) and former Houston Texans star JJ Watt (Burnley) have taken minority stakes in recent years.
