It's fair to say Naby Keita did not live up to expectations at Liverpool following his transfer from RB Leipzig in 2018.

The Guinean midfielder was 23 when he made the switch to Merseyside after carving out a reputation as one of the best young midfielders in the world during his time at Leipzig.

However, injuries plagued Keita for much of his time at Liverpool and he never came close to consistently producing the form that had impressed the world's biggest clubs while he was in Germany.

Five years after joining Liverpool for a $65.3million transfer fee, he left as a free agent last year, signing for Werder Bremen.

Keita is contracted to Werder until 2026, but has only played five times for the Bundesliga club since the beginning of last season.

Things aren't quite going to plan for Keita in Germany, and it looks as though he took the international break as a chance to return to the city he lived in for five years.

The now 29-year-old shared a pictured of himself in a dining room on Instagram alongside the caption "Liverpool", suggesting that he is currently spending some time in the city.

Keita based himself in a house in Formby — a town outside Liverpool — after joining the Reds, before buying an apartment in the city center later on in his Liverpool career.

Keita's last appearance for new club Werder came in March; he was suspended in April after refusing to board the team bus for a game against Bayer Leverkusen after finding out that he would be on the bench.

Werder issued a statement saying that it had hit Keita with a substantial fine while also confirming that he would not play for the club for the remainder of last season.

The Bundesliga club shared another statement at the start of this campaign which said that Keita would continue to train alone as he attempted to find a new club ahead of the summer transfer deadline.

A transfer did not materialise, however, and his situation remains unchanged.

Keita claimed in a recent interview with The Guardian that he had apologized to his teammates for letting them down at the end of last season.

Leverkusen head coach Ole Werner, however, suggested last month that a return to the team for Keita is not on the cards any time soon.

He said: "Keita is not our issue right now, and I think it's best for both sides if we simply look ahead and into the future to see what good solutions Naby can find for himself and what solutions we can find without him."
