Alexis Mac Allister and Argentina delivered a masterclass performance last night, thrashing archrivals Brazil 4-1 in a CONMEBOL World Cup qualifying match in Buenos Aires.
The match, which confirmed Argentina’s qualification for the 2026 World Cup, showcased the reigning world champions’ dominance over their South American rivals and extended their unbeaten streak against Brazil to five matches since 2019.
The match began with explosive energy as Julián Alvarez needed just four minutes to open the scoring, muscling past two Brazilian defenders before poking the ball through goalkeeper Bento’s legs.
Chelsea midfielder Enzo Fernández doubled Argentina’s advantage in the 12th minute, finishing from close range after a slick attacking move.
Brazil briefly found hope when Matheus Cunha capitalized on a rare mistake from Argentina’s Cristian Romero in the 26th minute, robbing the defender of possession before driving a low shot beyond Emiliano Martínez.
However, Liverpool midfielder Alexis Mac Allister restored Argentina’s two-goal cushion in the 37th minute with a deft first-time finish from Fernández’s clipped pass.
The fiery encounter wasn’t limited to on-field action, as players engaged in heated exchanges throughout the match.
Most notably, Argentina midfielder Leandro Paredes clashed with Brazil’s Rodrygo in a verbal altercation that highlighted the tension between the teams.
After Rodrygo allegedly called Paredes “a bad player,” the Argentine midfielder responded with a cutting reminder of the trophy disparity between them: “I won two Copa Americas and a World Cup.
And you—nothing.”
The verbal spat followed provocative pre-match comments from Brazilian winger Raphinha, who had boldly claimed that Brazil would beat Argentina “not only on the field but also off it if necessary.”
Nevertheless, Mac Allister did his talking on the pitch and it’s fair to say that Argentine media were delighed with his display.
TyC Sports praised how ‘complete’ Liverpool’s No.10 is, giving him a 7/10 for his display and wrote:
“He is such a complete player that it is difficult to highlight a facet of the game against him; it complies with all of them1
Balance to always be well positioned and surprise to reach the goal in the 3-0.”

La Nacion also gave Mac Allister a 7/10 and gave their assessment as:
“Another outstanding note in the concert of virtuoso flyers that was selected
Great intuition to take the opponent’s area by storm, as he did in his goal with a subtle touch.”
“If a teammate is in trouble, Mac Allister will always show up to vent it.”
Meanwhile, Ole gave him a 9/10 and praised his ‘tremendous’ ability to arrive in the box for his goal.
Mac Allister was always going to have a big role to play in this international break without the likes of Lionel Messi in the squad.
Although Arne Slot and his staff would have preferred the 26-year-old to perhaps get a bit more rest, they can find solace that his form was strong for his nation.
