Liverpool look likely to be in the market for both a centre-back and a left-back this summer.

The left-back position in particular has been a problem area for Arne Slot this season, with Andy Robertson displaying a clear downturn in form.

Former Liverpool defender Jamie Carragher has been a vocal advocate of the Reds signing a left-sided centre-back who could essentially kill two birds with one stone.

Carragher thinks Liverpool are missing a versatile left-sider in the mould of Riccardo Calfiori at Arsenal or Josko Gvardiol at Man City.

Irrespective of what Carragher believes, Liverpool have been linked with plenty of these kinds of players over the past year or so.

One who has stood out as having especially strong links has been Chelsea’s Levi Colwill.

However, despite Liverpool’s apparant interest in Colwill, both Carragher and Gary Neville appear to have warned the Reds off him.

Rumours that Colwill could join Liverpool have dated all the way back to the summer of 2023.

18 months ago, with the England international stalling over a new contract at Chelsea, it looked possible that the Reds could swoop in and pluck him from Stamford Bridge.

Colwill ultimately signed his new deal at Chelsea, though, and has since become a regular for the Blues.

However, links to Liverpool have continued, with reports from August naming Colwill as a target for 2025.

But after watching the 21-year-old put in a nightmare display against Brighton on Friday, Neville and Carragher sounded a warning that Liverpool should have been listening to.

“Colwill’s got to get stronger,” Neville insisted on Sky Sports after watching Brighton’s third goal of Friday night’s 3-0 win.

“He doesn’t look powerful enough in the kit,” Carragher agreed.

“He’s got to get stronger,” Neville reiterated.

Colwill is still young and there’s every chance he develops into a player who Liverpool really should be looking to sign.

However, his recent displays for Chelsea suggest that Colwill is not someone the Reds should be planning to spend big on right now.

Back in 2023, reports claimed that Chelsea could entertain offers of around £40m to sell Colwill.

Watching his performances this season, and it’s clear that Liverpool would have come to regret spending that much.

Given their long-standing interest in him, it seems probable that Liverpool will still be keeping Colwill in mind as they look to strengthen their defence.

But they should really heed Neville and Carragher’s warning before going down that path.
