Southampton’s torrid time in the Premier League took another turn over the weekend as their defeat to Spurs confirmed their relegation from England’s top-flight.
With seven games of the season remaining, the Saints have set a new record as they knock Derby County off the top spot for the earliest a team has been relegated in Premier League history.
Russell Martin started the season as manager of the club, but his struggles were clear to see and Croatian manager Ivan Juric took over the seemingly impossible task in December 2024.
Ivan Juric struggled to make a difference, winning just two of his sixteen games in charge of the club, and his tough debut in the Premier League has come to an end after just 108 days.
According to Sky Sports News, Simon Rusk will take the team on until the end of the season.
Rusk took charge briefly when Martin was sacked and Southampton were looking for his replacement.
It now appears that a familiar face will now be joining Rusk on the touchline to see out the remainder of the season.
Adam Lallana joined Southampton at the start of the season, returning to the club that kickstarted his professional playing career.
Accumulating 235 appearances for the Saints during his first stint at the club, he has since gone on to represent Liverpool and Brighton, before returning to his hometown club as a seasoned professional.
As an experienced member in the dressing room, Adam Lallan will have no doubt been a place to turn to on several occasions during this tough time for the club this season.
Now, he will take on the role as Simon Rusks’ assistant.
After the loss vs Spurs, Juric said: “We know it is a tough moment, a bad moment.
But in another way I think the future of Southampton will be great, with the fans.”
“We are relegated but they have showed a lot to their club, to the players they have and I think it has to be really motivating for everybody to create something really good, much stronger than we created this year.”
Southampton will be hoping that Rusk and Lallana will provide the Saints’ faithful with some enjoyment in the remaining games of the season
