Newcastle manager Eddie Howe has provided an injury update on one of his star players amid growing fitness concerns ahead of their upcoming Carabao Cup final against Liverpool.

The Magpies face Liverpool at Wembley on March 16, with the game coming just two weeks after both sides met in the Premier League.

Liverpool secured a 2-0 win in the game to strengthen their grip on the Premier League title race.

However, Newcastle United striker Alexander Isak was unable to partake in the game after suffering a minor groin injury.

The Swede forward, who has been linked with a summer switch to Anfield, was expected to trouble Liverpool’s backline but could not participate in the game due to the injury.

He returned to the starting XI in Newcastle’s FA Cup tie against Brighton but was substituted later in the game

His withdrawal raised fresh questions about his availability for the upcoming Wembley showpiece against Liverpool.

However, Isak is not the only player who could miss the Wembley game.

According to Newcastle United coach Eddie Howe, his side could be sweating on another key player in Lewis Hall.

The left-back has been a regular for Newcastle this season but was absent against Brighton because of an ankle injury suffered after the loss to Liverpool.

Howe revealed that the 20-year-old has had a scan and got a specialist’s opinion on his issue.

“It’s an ankle problem that Lewis picked up after the Liverpool game,” Howe revealed.

“He didn’t really recover well.

There’s no timescale on that at the moment.”

Meanwhile, while Isak and Hall may recover in time for the match vs Liverpool, Anthony Gordon will miss the game after receiving a red card for shoving Jan Paul van Hecke in Newcastle’s loss to Brighton.

The Liverpool-born winger meaning must now serve a three-match ban, so he will be suspended for the final.
