Newcastle are ready to appeal Anthony Gordon's red card - which currently has him missing the Carabao Cup final.

The Magpies winger was sent off before extra-time against Brighton on Sunday in what was a forgettable FA Cup outing for Eddie Howe's men.

Newcastle's 10 men couldn't hold out against the visitors, who were also down a man, with Danny Welbeck notching the winning goal in extra-time.

The red card handed out to Gordon will see him suspended for the next three matches, which includes the cup final at Wembley against Liverpool on March 16.

Howe though claims the England winger had no malicious intent in his actions and says the Magpies will look to have the card overturned if they believe there are grounds to do so.

Their winger scored earlier this season against the Reds in a 3-3 draw at St James' Park and his pace is one of the team's most crucial weapons.

The red card means the winger could miss the Wembley showdown against Liverpool.
