Newcastle United winger Anthony Gordon is currently set to miss the Carabao Cup final against Liverpool on March 16 after receiving a three-match suspension for violent conduct during the FA Cup defeat to Brighton last weekend.
Gordon was sent off late in the FA Cup fifth-round clash after pushing Brighton defender Jan Paul van Hecke in the face with both hands.
Referee Anthony Taylor issued a straight red card for violent conduct, triggering an automatic three-game ban.
This suspension rules Gordon out of Premier League matches against West Ham and Brentford, as well as the Carabao Cup final at Wembley.
Newcastle manager Eddie Howe initially hinted at the possibility of appealing the decision after the tie.
Gordon’s absence is a significant blow for Newcastle as they prepare to face Liverpool in what could be their first major trophy win since 1955.
The 24-year-old has been one of Newcastle’s standout performers this season, contributing key goals and assists in their push for European qualification and domestic success.
His suspension leaves Eddie Howe with limited options on the left wing, with Harvey Barnes or Joelinton likely to step into his role for the final.
But it seems that the Magpies have now made a decision, with Howe confirming in his pre-West Ham press conference on Friday that no appeal would be forthcoming:
“We discussed it as a club with the respective people we needed to discuss it with, lawyers et cetera,” How said as quoted by the Gazette & Herald.
“We just felt there probably wasn’t sufficient grounds to do that [appeal].”
“You have to look at it in isolation and review the incident, there was no intention from Anthony,” he explained
“Without going into too much detail on the actual event itself, I think the player sort of bends down, it makes the push look worse.
There was no intention from Anthony to hurt anybody.”
“You have to look at it and go ‘does this have a chance of being successful?’?
Anthony understands that.”
