Newcastle star Anthony Gordon looks set to miss the Carabao Cup final against Liverpool after being sent off in Sunday's FA Cup match against Brighton.

Referee Anthony Taylor showed Gordon a straight red card, and VAR saw no reason to overturn the decision.

Unless Eddie Howe's side succeed with an appeal, it will be the second time in a row that they have gone into the Carabao Cup final without a key man.



Back in 2023, goalkeeper Nick Pope was dismissed in a league game against Liverpool and missed the final against Manchester United.

Gordon wasn't the only player shown a red card in the match at St James' Park.

"Anthony Gordon has gone over the top of Jan Paul van Hecke," pundit and former England goalkeeper Paul Robinson said on BBC Radio 5 Live.

Fabian Schar thought he had snatched a late winner, only to be ruled offside, with the Premier League sides going to extra-time.
