Borussia Dortmund defender Nico Schlotterbeck has spoken about his future amid reported interest from Liverpool.
The German defender is one of the several centre-backs linked with a potential move to Liverpool this summer.
The Reds are seriously considering reinforcing their centre-back department in the summer, given the possibility of one or two departures in that position.
Arne Slot’s side currently have just four senior centre-backs.
But Joe Gomez and Jarell Quansah, who is wanted by Newcastle United, could leave this summer.
As such, there will be a need for additions in that position.
Bournemouth and Spain defender Dean Huijsen, Crystal Palace’s defender Marc Guehi, and most recently, Bayer Leverkusen star Piero Hincapie are all reported options for the Reds.
Also, according to a recent report by BILD, the Reds have identified Schlotterbeck as an option to shadow Virgil Van Dijk, who is now 33 years old.
Liverpool are thought to be prepared to invest substantially in securing the defender’s services, with figures suggesting the Reds would be willing to table an offer exceeding €50 million (approximately £42 million).
However, Borussia Dortmund plan to make it hard for the 25-year-old suitors to price him away from Signal Iduna Park.
The Bundesliga side plans to make “Schlotterbeck the club’s face of the future and a potential captain.”
However, it appears that Schlotterbeck himself is eager to try a new challenge, considering his recent statements.
Speaking to Sky Germany, the German revealed that he plans to sit down with the club in the summer to discuss his future.
While he admitted being satisfied at Dortmund, he hinted he would love to play ‘international’ football, a reference to the UEFA Champions League.
When asked about his plans given that his contract runs until 2027, Schlotterbeck said:
“I’m really happy to be here and know what it means to play for the club.
In the summer, we’ll sit down with the club’s management and my family and discuss the plan for the next few years.
“And hope that we can achieve something good.
The club is capable of so much more.”
The defender now added, “Playing internationally is what defines the club.
