Nottingham Forest fans have paid a classy tribute to the 97 victims of the Hillsborough disaster ahead of today's clash with Liverpool at Anfield.

Approximately 3,055 visiting supporters have made the journey north to Merseyside for the 3pm BST kick-off and made the perfect impression ahead of the game by displaying a banner that read: "Respect the 97.

No tragedy chanting."

The heartfelt tribute certainly went down well with the home faithful as the players lined up for kick-off, with many applauding the Forest fans for their show of kindness.

Immediately after, Anfield paid its own impeccable tribute to the great Ron Yeats, who sadly passed away last week aged 86 following a battle with Alzheimer's.

The tribute began with a minute's applause around the ground as the players lined up either side of the half-way line, where a large tifo of Yeats was waved around in the Kop.

The tribute then ended with the Kop singing "You'll Never Walk Alone" as Arne Slot's side took to the field in the Saturday sunshine, hoping to earn a fourth successive victory to start the 2024-25 campaign under their new manager.

But before the referee could blow his whistle to signal the start of the game, the Forest fans let themselves down as soon as they'd earned applause from Anfield, taking it upon themselves to start chanting "Sign on" before "You'll Never Walk Alone" had finished ringing around the ground.

While banter between opposition fans is part and parcel of football these days, the timing was especially poor from the visitors given they'd just paid a perfect tribute to the Hillsborough victims only moments before.

However, it will be Liverpool who will be hoping to have the last laugh come full-time by collecting all three points from today's clash with the East Midlands outfit - a win that would retain their place in the top two of the Premier League.
