Under Jurgen Klopp at least, it’s been rare to see Liverpool players depart the club and go on to do well.
Sadio Mane, despite his world-class performances for Liverpool, has faced challenges joining Bayern Munich and landed up at Al-Nassr a year later.
We all know Philippe Coutinho and his story at Barcelona following his £160 million move.
Similarly, Georginio Wijnaldum’s career took a downturn after leaving Liverpool, with disappointing spells at Paris Saint-Germain and Roma before moving to the Saudi Pro League as well.
But some ex-Liverpool players have been thriving since leaving Anfield, and one of those is Welsh international Neco Williams.
Williams joined Forest from Liverpool in 2022 for £17 million, following a successful loan spell at Fulham in the Championship.
During his time at Liverpool, Williams struggled to establish himself as a regular first-team player, making just 33 appearances across all competitions over three seasons.
The move to Forest has proven transformative for his career, with the young full-back amassing 97 appearances and scoring twice for the club.
As a result, the BBC have reported that Nottingham Forest are now looking to extend the contract of the former Liverpool man.
The 23-year-old has become an integral part of Forest’s impressive defensive unit, which has conceded just 35 goals in the Premier League this season—the third-best record in the league—contributing to the club’s surprising third-place position in the table.
Nuno Espirito Santos’ side want to extend the defender’s future beyond his current deal, which expires in the summer of 2026.
The defender’s consistent performances have not gone unnoticed, with Italian side Atalanta expressing interest last summer.
However, Williams chose to remain at the City Ground, where he has featured 29 times this season, showcasing his importance to the team7.
Forest’s desire to extend Williams’ contract follows recent successful negotiations with other key players?
Striker Chris Wood, who has netted 18 goals this season, recently signed a new deal until 2027, while promising defender Murillo committed his future to the club with a four-and-a-half-year contract in January.
With Liverpool’s apparent need for a right-back, many Reds fans were wondering if the club had a buyback clause – but there is no public suggestion he did in his 2022 exit.
