Jan Molby has expressed his bewilderment at Trent Alexander-Arnold's recent admission that winning the Ballon d'Or would be more meaningful to him than clinching the World Cup.
The Liverpool full-back, who has already notched up Premier League and Champions League titles in his impressive young career, is yet to add the coveted individual accolade to his collection.
In an interview with Sky Sports last October, Alexander-Arnold – who experienced heartache with England last summer losing the Euro 2024 final to Spain – was questioned about his preference between a second Champions League title, the Ballon d'Or, becoming Liverpool captain, or securing an international honour with England.
To the astonishment of some, the 26-year-old, whose contract expires in the summer, chose the Ballon d'Or, which is currently held by Manchester City midfielder Rodri.
He justified his choice by saying: "Because I believe I can.
It doesn't matter how many trophies you win, or how many medals you've got."
Molby, who spent 12 years at Anfield, described England star Alexander-Arnold's remarks as "odd" and suggested that even if Real Madrid, who reportedly made a £20million offer for him last month, were to secure his services in the summer for nothing, he wouldn't necessarily be the top player at the Santiago Bernabeu.
"Trent saying winning the Ballon D'or would mean more than winning the World Cup is an odd statement to make," he said to BonusCodeBets.co.uk..
But I understand the importance of winning the Ballon d'Or.

"We saw how disappointed Vini Jr was when Rodri won it.
"He's a right back but more so, he's a very good footballer.
He's never overexposed, he's quick and he's determined.
"Whilst I don't think Liverpool will be happy to see Trent go, it's an area I think the club can cope with and maybe get a back up in.
