It has been a week to forget for Arne Slot, Virgil van Dijk, and the rest of the squad having been dumped out of two competitions in the span of 6 days by PSG and Newcastle United respectively.
With the international break now underway, the Reds will have to wait a while before trying to put things right against Everton on April 2.
Meanwhile, Liverpool captain Virgil van Dijk found himself at the center of transfer speculation last week after cameras caught him engaged in conversation with PSG officials following the Reds’ Champions League exit.
Footage emerged showing the Dutchman speaking with PSG president Nasser Al-Khelaifi and sporting director Luis Campos in the stadium tunnel?
The video quickly circulated on social media, triggering immediate concern among Liverpool supporters.
The timing of this conversation proved particularly problematic, coinciding with ongoing uncertainty about Van Dijk’s future at Anfield.
With the 33-year-old defender’s contract set to expire this summer and no announcement of an extension, the tunnel conversation fed into existing fears that Liverpool’s captain might be exploring options elsewhere.
Despite the widespread speculation, it seems a PSG official has now come out to put an end to these reports.
Director of Press and Media Relations for PSG, Pascal Ferre, told 365Scores:
“I don’t understand why this video has caused such a huge controversy on social media,” he said.
“The conversation between Van Dijk, the club president, and also the sporting director was completely natural and spontaneous.”
“Our president did not discuss any negotiations to sign the player, and everything rumored about this is false.”
“The discussion was friendly, and the club president has the utmost respect for Van Dijk.”
Additionally, French outlet RMC Sport, reporting last week, also gave a similar account of what happened.
According to the report, Liverpool captain Virgil van Dijk personally took the initiative to speak with PSG president Nasser Al-Khelaifi and sporting director Luis Campos while PSG’s players were still in their dressing room.
The Reds skipper greeted Al-Khelaifi warmly with a hug before inviting Campos to join their conversation.
Rather than addressing transfer speculation or contract matters, Van Dijk used the moment to apologize for remarks in the Parc Des Prince tunnel he had made during the first leg in Paris.
