The Parc des Princes will be the stage for a titanic clash this evening as Paris Saint-Germain host Liverpool in the first leg of their Champions League Round of 16 tie.
Both sides enter the contest in scintillating form, setting the stage for what promises to be a thrilling encounter between two of Europe’s most potent attacking forces.
Liverpool’s journey to this stage has been nothing short of dominant.
The Reds topped the revamped 36-team league phase with an impressive 21 points from a possible 24, winning their first seven matches before a solitary defeat to PSV Eindhoven in a dead rubber.
PSG, on the other hand, had to navigate a more treacherous route, finishing 15th in the league phase before emphatically dispatching French rivals Brest 10-0 on aggregate in the play-offs.
But it seems that the form of the Ligue 1 Champions are emboldening them ahead of the tie, with summer signing Joao Neves saying in the build-up:
“Yes, they possess significant individual talent similar to us, but I firmly believe we are better as a collective.
That’s the beauty of football; it’s a team sport, and at this moment, our team stands out.”
“I believe the most effective way to defend against them is by having possession of the ball?
“We can defend with the ball, which is one of our strongest strategies.”
“We excel at maintaining ball control and will strive to implement our style of play on the ground, utilizing our movements and quality — that’s how we operate.”
And now Luis Enrique has named his 22-man squad to face Liverpool:
1 – Gianluigi Donnarumma
2 – Achraf Hakimi
3 – Presnel Kimpembe
5 – Marquinhos
7 – Khvicha Kvaratskhelia
8 – Fabian Ruiz
9 – Gonçalo Ramos
10 – Ousmane Dembélé
14 – Désiré Doué
17 – Vitinha
19 – Lee Kang-In
21 – Lucas Hernandez
24 – Senny Mayulu
25 – Nuno Mendes
29 – Bradley Barcola
33 – Warren Zaïre-Emery
35 – Lucas Beraldo
39 – Matvey Safonov
49 – Ibrahim Mbaye
51 – Willian Pacho
80 – Arnau Tenas
87 – João Neves
This will be only the third Champions League meeting between the clubs, with their last encounters coming in the 2018-19 group stage.
Each side claimed a victory on home soil in those matches, with Liverpool’s 3-2 win at Anfield particularly memorable thanks to Roberto Firmino’s stoppage-time winner.
