As the Champions League enters the business end of the season, all eyes turn to the Parc des Princes where Paris Saint-Germain will host Liverpool in what promises to be one of the most captivating ties of the round of 16.
The first leg, scheduled for Wednesday, March 5, 2025, at 20:00 local time, has all the makings of a European classic with both sides enjoying stellar domestic seasons and harboring legitimate ambitions of lifting the trophy in Munich come May.
Luis Enrique’s revitalized PSG side that has emerged as a more cohesive unit following Kylian Mbappé’s departure to Real Madrid.
The French champions demonstrated their devastating attacking potential in their most recent outing, dismantling Lille 4-1 at the Parc des Princes.
The comprehensive victory saw PSG score four first-half goals, with Bradley Barcola opening the scoring in the sixth minute, followed by strikes from Marquinhos, Ousmane Dembélé, and a spectacular effort from Désiré Doué just before half-time.
This performance highlighted the attacking threat Liverpool will need to neutralize if they are to leave Paris with a positive result.
And ahead of the clash, it seems that Enrique and his side are going into the tie with maximum confidence.
Speaking over the weekend on the fixture, the Spaniard revealed that he knows Liverpool but does not see them as a ‘better team’:
“I already know Liverpool very well,” Enrique said as quoted by PSG Talk.
“Whether it’s Liverpool or the top teams in general, we always have an idea.
But after analyzing their performances, I don’t really see a better team.”
“There’s no doubt that since the start of the season, they’ve been the most in-form team in Europe, not only in terms of play and performance but also results.”
“It could very well be a Champions League final, but unfortunately, that won’t be the case.
We will do everything we can to give ourselves a real chance and be better than Liverpool?
That’s our goal.”
Most pundits and fans would suggest that the tie is slightly Liverpool favoured thanks to their form in a harder league and their European experience.
PSG received a significant boost ahead of the match with the return of promising young midfielder Warren Zaïre-Emery, who had been sidelined with a sprained ankle since January.
The 18-year-old made his comeback in the Coupe de France quarter-finals against Stade Briochin and followed that with a longer appearance against Lille, suggesting he could play a role against Liverpool.
