Paul Joyce has run the rule over Liverpool’s transfer business in the coming summer and has revealed why the Reds are in a good position in the transfer market.

The statement “it is going to be a big or busy summer at Liverpool” has been heard too frequently in the last couple of months.

Slot was one of the first to admit, as far back as January, that the club is already making concrete plans to strengthen in the summer.

“Liverpool should always be competing for a league title; we should always be competing for the Champions League.

I’m hoping I will be able to keep the club at that level,” he told the BBC in January.

“I know people sometimes question this because they haven’t seen us doing a lot in the transfer market in the summer and now in the winter as well.

There’s a reason for that – because we’re happy with the squad.”

“But I do know we’re definitely working on strengthening in the summer.”

Liverpool captain Virgil van Dijk also hinted that the club’s summer transfer plans may have played a part in his desire to renew at the club.

“I think they’re planning to make it a big summer, so we all have to trust the board as a Liverpool-connected fan to do the right job,” he said after the win over West Ham on Sunday.

“And hopefully the club will be challenging for titles for the next two seasons as well.”

Several journalists, including Fabrizio Romano and David Ornstein, also admitted across several platforms that the club will be busy this summer.

As a result, several names have been linked with a move to Anfield this summer.

From the highly-rated Alexander Isak to the little-known Moritz Nicolas, there is a name thrown up as a potential summer Liverpool signing almost every day these days.

While half of these players may never get a call from Richard Hughes and co, there is no denying that several names are currently being considered at the club.

Indeed, after being relatively quiet over the last two windows, Liverpool will sign players this summer.

Amid the backdrop of genuine links to several names and the obvious need for additions this summer, The Times’ Paul Joyce has revealed why the Reds are in a good position for a busy summer.

Comparing where Liverpool are currently and where they were when Slot arrived last summer, the journalist observed that the Dutchman is now prepared for transfers, having fully assessed his squad.  The fact that the club did not spend lavishly in the last two windows has also strengthened their position in the market.

“Liverpool are in a strong position, having spent a year doing their extensive background work on potential targets and building up financial resources,” Joyce wrote.

“Slot has a better understanding of his squad’s ability and, together with Richard Hughes, Michael Edwards, the director of research, Will Spearman and the chief scout, Barry Hunter, can execute plans to enhance his options for next season?

Oh, and they will go into the market as champions.”
