AC Milan manager Paulo Fonseca has confessed that one Liverpool man was too ‘difficult’ to stop at the San Siro on Tuesday night.

Liverpool secured a 3-1 victory over AC Milan at the San Siro in their Champions League opener.

Despite conceding early to a Christian Pulisic goal, Liverpool quickly regained control.



Ibrahima Konate and Virgil van Dijk scored from set-pieces, while Dominik Szoboszlai sealed the win with a second-half goal following a brilliant assist from Cody Gakpo.

This win marked an important bounce-back after a recent loss to Nottingham Forest.

Arne Slot was certainly satisfied with the two set-piece goals that got Liverpool back in the game, saying after the win:

“I think we were a bit disappointed with the result against Nottingham Forest [but] we were also disappointed from getting eight corner kicks and not scoring, but we were very close.”

“We felt with all the work we put in on set-pieces that at some moment we should get the reward.”

“I think [it was] two very good set-pieces and two very good headers that got us two goals, which was important because I think we were very comfortable on the ball, pressed really well, but in the end you need goals as well.”

“We hit the crossbar a few times today out of open play, so we needed set-pieces and it was good to see that we scored them for all the work my assistants and the players put in.

It is nice to see it got rewarded today.”

What did Paulo Fonseca say about Liverpool?

The Portuguese manager seems under pressure in Milan having joined from Lille in the summer.

The Italy giants are 10th in Serie A having only secured one win in their opening four league games.

It is not the AC Milan sides of old, and the former Roma manager heaped praised on the Reds after the game:

“We played against Liverpool, who are a great team,” Fonseca said in his post-match press conference.

“We started the game well.

Then, they had a chance on the counterattack and scored two goals from set pieces that changed the game and our mental balance.”

“We still make too many mistakes,” he continued

“In these types of games, it’s the details that make the difference.

You can’t make mistakes.”

There has been insinuations in the Italian media already that Fonseca is not the right man for the job, with the Portuguese manager openly admitting that Liverpool is ‘more of a team’ than his Milan side:

“I think Liverpool are more of a team than us and they showed it.

Salah and other players are the most difficult players to (stop).”
