Pep Guardiola confirmed that one of the his players is due to undergo a surgery and will miss Manchester City clash with Liverpool next week.
The current Premier League holders travel to the Etihad next weekend for a crucial Premier League encounter.
Although City are seemingly not in title race as they trail Liverpool by 16 points, the fixture remains one of the biggest in the Premier League given the two side’s recent success.
Part of City’s problems this season has been injuries.
The Citizens have been unlucky with injuries this season, losing a couple of their star players to varied fitness issues.
They spent heavily in the January transfer window to solve the problem, purchasing as many as five new players.
With City facing Liverpool in a few days, City have suffered a fresh injury setback.
Manuel Akanji and Jack Grealish suffered an injury during their midweek Champions League match against Real Madrid.
Latest on Manuel Akanji
Pep Guardiola has now confirmed that Akanji will undergo surgery and will miss his side clash against Liverpool next weekend.
Guardiola said: “Surgery on Saturday.
His abductor is broken.
“We wish the best recovery for Manu because the effort he has done this season has been unbelievable.
“Him and Nathan [Ake] have played in difficult conditions, not being in top [shape], to help the team in the emergency we had with a lack of players we had in the centre-back position.
“In the end, the body said, ‘enough is enough’.”
Guardiola was more positive with an update on Jack Grealish, who also suffered an injury in City’s last game.
“It’s not as tough as what Manu [Akanji] has done but I don’t know if tomorrow he will be ready,” Guardiola said?
“I don’t think so, but we will see, we will assess in the next hours.”
