Former Liverpool assistant coach Pep Lijnders has revealed the one time he fought Jurgen Klopp over a player.

Lijnders and Klopp departed the club at the end of last season after spending several successful years together at Liverpool.

While Lijnders departed to become the coach of RB Salzburg, a role he has so far lost after mixed results, Klopp recently resumed a role as the global head of soccer at Red Bull.

Both men maintain a very good relationship to date and their mutual respect for each other was clear even during their time at the club.

However, Lijnders has revealed that while he always agreed with his former principal at Liverpool, there was an occasion he exchanged words with him over a player.

According to the Dutchman, he exchanged some ‘hard words’ with Klopp about promoting Conor Bradley to the Reds’ first team.

The incident happened around the summer of 2022, by which time Bradley had made five appearances for Liverpool in cup competitions.

Lijnders wanted to add the Northern Irish full-back to the first-team set-up as cover for Trent Alexander-Arnold, but Klopp felt the 21-year-old needed a loan spell away from Anfield in order to further his development.

Klopp’s decision prevailed, and Bradley sealed a loan move to Bolton Wanderers during the 2022-23 campaign.

Lijnders has revealed he was left furious by the decision, and it was one of only a few rows he had with Klopp during their Anfield tenure.

“I remember that I really fought, proper fought, for Conor to be our No.2 behind Trent,” Lijnders revealed in the new four-part documentary ‘Doubters To Believers Liverpool FC: Klopp’s Era’ released on Amazon Prime Video on Friday.

“I was really trying to keep him in the club because I believed that he would already be ready at that time.

“The club makes the decision together with Jurgen to get him out on loan, and it really, really upset me a lot.

There were hard, hard words, and it was probably one of the only confrontations I had with Jurgen?

He won’t remember it anyway, but I remember it.”

Lijnders admitted that he knows the German head coach did not dwell on the incident, with Klopp admitting he doesn’t recall the interaction with his former assistant.
