Liverpool’s former assistant coach, Pep Lijnders, has revealed the unique qualities that Jurgen Klopp offers to his new employees at Red Bull.

Klopp recently took up a new job, becoming the Global Head of Soccer Red Bull.

The former Liverpool coach will oversee Red Bull’s international football network, which includes clubs like RB Leipzig, RB Salzburg, and New York Red Bulls.

He will officially begin working in his new role from January 1, 2025.

While Klopp will not be involved in the club’s day-to-day management, he will focus on mentoring key personnel and helping Red Bull maintain its innovative football philosophy.

After his appointment was confirmed, Oliver Mintzlaff, CEO of Corporate Projects and Investments at Red Bull, stated that Klopp’s hire was the biggest coup in Red Bull’s involvement with football:

“We are very proud of this outstanding and certainly the strongest signing in Red Bull’s soccer history,” he explained.

“Jürgen Klopp is one of the greatest and most influential figures in world soccer, with extraordinary skills and charisma.”

And now, Klopp’s former right-hand man at Anfield has also spoken about what the German offers his new employee.

Klopp and Lijnders spent several years working together at Liverpool, and the 41-year-old RB Salzburg coach knows what he offers.

Speaking to the Guardian about Klopp’s appointment, Lijnders, who became RB Salzburg head coach after leaving Liverpool, revealed he was happy for the appointment.

“I’m very happy for Red Bull they have been able to sign Jürgen because he has been such an icon as manager,” Lijnders told the Guardian.

“He will provide those clubs with a very strong identity in terms of playing style, leadership and humanity,”

Although Klopp’s role involves working with Salzburg, Lijnders emphasises that the Austrian side are their own club and make their own decisions.

However, he maintained that his relationship with Klopp would not really change.

“We will always be close to each other; he will always be there to reach out with a helping hand and to give advice.”

Lijnders also revealed what fueled Klopp’s decision to leave Liverpool at the end of last season, offering insight into why his departure was not announced in December when he actually made the decision.

“Jürgen was looking for a sabbatical, to have real time for family and friends,” he added.

“And for me, it felt the right moment to become head coach, so that coincided well.”

On why Klopp’s move was not announced earlier, the former Liverpool man said: “We didn’t want to spoil the Christmas of the Liverpool fans.”
