Plymouth Argyle is a club that has fought through the highs and lows of English football.
From the financial struggles that nearly saw them collapse 15 years ago to their rise through the lower leagues, the club has been on a wild ride.
Under the leadership of Simon Hallett, they secured promotion to the Championship in 2023.
But surviving at this level has been brutal.
The 2023-24 season has been a struggle.
Wayne Rooney’s appointment as head coach in May turned into a disaster, with the team suffering heavy defeats and dropping to the bottom of the table.
Rooney’s high-pressing tactics didn’t work, and he was sacked in January after just seven months.
Now, with Miron Muslic in charge, Plymouth is trying to turn things around.
But despite the league struggles, there’s something special about the FA Cup.
Plymouth stunned Premier League side Brentford in the third round, setting up a dream fourth-round tie at home against Liverpool.
And for Hallett, this matchup means more than just a big game.
Plymouth Argyle Chairman says club has ‘unfinished business’ with Liverpool
“Yes, unfinished business,” Hallett said while speaking to The Athletic, referring to Liverpool’s narrow 1-0 win over Plymouth in the 2017 FA Cup.
“They got a lucky winner!”
The excitement around this match is massive, but it has also created a problem.
“We’re getting deluged with ticket requests and it’s a scarce resource?
When we’ve played at Wembley, we’ve taken 30-35,000.”
“We can only fit in 17,000 at Home Park, and 2,500 have to be Liverpool fans.”
For Hallett, football is a rollercoaster.
“You’re either deliriously happy or utterly miserable but, on average, it’s brilliant!”
Plymouth fans will be hoping for the happy side of that equation against the Liverpool side they face.
