Liverpool and Manchester City both took full advantage of Arsenal's 2-0 loss to Bournemouth after dramatic victories on Sunday.
First, City needed another late John Stones goal to come to their rescue as the champions came from behind to beat Wolves.
Liverpool then reclaimed top spot by battling to a 2-1 win over Chelsea in a tense affair where VAR played a big part for both sides.
The result has now piled the pressure on Arsenal, who will find themselves seven points behind Arne Slot's Reds if they fall to another defeat when the two meet at the Emirates next weekend.

Uruguayan reports earlier this week shared a fear that Liverpool Arne Slot isn't giving Darwin Nunez a chance.
Fittingly, it was the big-money striker the Dutchman turned to once Diogo Jota had been forced off through injury after 30 minutes.
Nunez failed to get on the scoresheet but impressed in a very different type of performance in the scrappy 2-1 win over Chelsea.
The 25-year-old was unusually among Liverpool's main creators in the first-half, teeing up Cody Gakpo for an early chance.
Curtis Jones' second penalty which was later overturned was originally instigated by a Nunez through-ball.
After the break, the former Benfica man found himself in a personal tussle with Chelsea defender Benoit Badiashille.
Such was his defensive work Nunez was tracking back to dive into slide tackles while already on a yellow card.
Opportunities for himself to shoot were few and far between but the all-action performance will be just what Slot was after.
Jamie Carragher called Nunez's performance 'outstanding' on Sky Sports following the full-time whistle.

Chelsea haven’t won any of their last 10 meetings with Liverpool across all competitions (D7 L3), while only once in their history have they had a longer winless run against the Reds (11 games – May 1985-October 1990).
However, captain Reece James, who made his first appearance of the season, feels his side can consider themselves unfortunate.
Speaking to Sky Sports, the England defender said: "Coming here is always tough.
It is still early days, we haven't been with the manager long."

An incredible seven days for Curtis Jones, last Sunday he and his partner welcomed their first child, a baby girl, Giselle Delilah Jones.
A week on and he's scored his first Premier League goal of the season with a dedicated celebration for his new daughter!
Jones added: "It’s the best thing ever.
"I was in the spare room last night but she’s a little dream – you just change her, feed her and back to sleep.
"But I thought it was wise to stay in the spare room, so I was wide awake and had lots of energy."

Could be famous last words but if there was ever a 'clear and obvious' difference between Jurgen Klopp and Arne Slot it's in this game.
Liverpool were so often chaotic, breathless and constantly pushing under the old regime.
Slot's tactical plan has been to take the sting completely out of Chelsea's attack since retaking the lead.
Lots of fouls, delays on restarts and sensible retention of possession and crucially, little to no chances for either side!
SEVEN minutes for the Reds to hold on as Slot gees up the crowd!

Having been called up to the England senior squad over the international break, the midfielder didn't travel to Finland for the Three Lions' 3-1 win in Helsinki.

Those changes seem to have reignited the visitors who were rocked by falling behind so quickly after drawing level.
A deep cross is met by Noni Madueke on the volley but the angle is against him and it bounces into Caoimhín Kelleher's midriff.
Chelsea quickly reclaim the ball and Pedro Neto draws a foul from Ryan Gravenberch.
However Cole Palmer's free-kick is deflected behind by a corner by Trent Alexander-Arnold and the corner comes to nothing.
Darwin Nunez affords Liverpool some breathing space by being fouled on the edge of his own box and now Arne Slot turns to his bench.

WHAT A RESPONSE FROM THE REDS!
Jones, who has won both of their penalties today whether eventually taken or not, has now popped up with a goal of his own.
Chelsea attempt to play a high defensive line on the edge of their box which does play Darwin Nunez offside.
But Jones makes a clever run from deep that is unchecked as Mohamed Salah cuts inside Malo Gusto and swings over a cross.
The England midfielder brings the ball down, and having failed to get his shot away in the chaos that led to the overturned penalty, this time he prods it past Robert Sanchez into the goal.
Jones has struck his first Premier League goal since scoring against Newcastle United at Anfield on New Years Day earlier this year.
Salah has now both scored and assisted in 34 separate Premier League matches, with only Wayne Rooney doing so in more games in Premier League history (36).

The visitors didn't have a shot on target in the first-half but they've just restored parity with their first of the restart!
It's a great run from Jackson, who is found by Moises Caicedo charging between Virgil van Dijk and Ibrahima Konate.
He shows uncharacteristic coolness to then slot past Caoimhín Kelleher into the bottom corner before the offside flag is raised.
However, replays show Konate's trailing leg has played him onside and the goal is awarded!
Jackson has now scored against 13 of the 18 teams he's faced in the Premier League after netting the equaliser at Anfield this afternoon.
Jackson has been directly involved in 13 goals in his last 13 appearances in the Premier League (nine goals, four assists), just one fewer than in his first 30 games for Chelsea in the competition (14 - 10 goals, four assists).

What a 45 minutes to break down at Anfield!
Chances galore at both ends and a tale of two penalties, one that was given and scored, and another that was given and overturned!
Mohamed Salah's successful spot-kick was his fifth goal against his former club Chelsea in the Premier League.
That is the joint-most by a player to have previously appeared for them in the competition, along with Kevin De Bruyne (5).
Chelsea meanwhile failed to record a shot on target in the first half vs Liverpool - the first time they've suffered that feat in a Premier League match since against Arsenal in April.
But that doesn't tell the full story - Nicolas Jackson has struck the woodwork, while Cole Palmer fluffed a late sitter.
Chelsea have had 18 touches in Liverpool's box in the first half, the most by a visiting team in a Premier League match at Anfield since Southampton in February 2020 (also 18).
Plenty of action to look forward to after the break!

Cole Palmer fires over!
How that could have turned the game on its head - from almost a second Liverpool penalty to a potential Chelsea equaliser.
Noni Madueke is too quick for Andy Robertson again and his second cut-back for Palmer is just as dangerous.
But the Premier League player of the month gets underneath his effort and steers it over the crossbar.
From the restart, Palmer does draw a foul from Dominik Szoboszlai - who is then shown a yellow card for booting the ball away.
The resulting free-kick comes to nothing and that should be that!
