Pep Guardiola accepted Manchester City had been outplayed as their Champions League campaign came to a limp end with a 3-1 defeat at Kylian Mbappe-inspired Real Madrid.

Mbappe scored a brilliant hat-trick in the second leg of their play-off at the Bernabeu Stadium on Wednesday to power the holders into the last 16 6-3 on aggregate.

City had led the tie 2-1 heading into the closing minutes at the Etihad Stadium last week only to surrender their advantage.

Yet this time they were hardly in the contest as Real took charge with Mbappe's opener on four minutes and the Frenchman ended all doubt with two more either side of the break.

City manager Guardiola said: "The plan was to extend the result that we brought from Manchester as long as possible but we conceded so early and with the injury to John (Stones) it was a little bit (more of) what has happened his season.

"We couldn't defend well with the movement from Mbappe and it was more difficult.

"The best team won, they deserved it.

That can't be happening."

Ollie Watkins believes Aston Villa could have stolen all three points against Liverpool.

Villa came from behind to lead against the Premier League leaders during an eventful Premier League clash.

They also had two goals disallowed and speaking to TNT Sports, goalscorer Watkins feels as though they could have won on the night.

"It was a tough game.

"When they get a few games under their belt I am sure it will flow and connect together nicely.

"Any team we play, we want to win the game and we will focus on ourselves and see where we are come the end of the season."

Virgil van Dijk won't let Liverpool's draw at Aston Villa distract them from their tough upcoming fixtures.

The 2-2 draw at Villa Park saw them fail to go ten points clear at the top of the Premier League.

It's only the eighth match Liverpool have failed to win in the league this season and with Manchester City around the corner, Van Dijk isn't dwelling on the dropped points.

"A bit disappointed but we fight," he told TNT Sports.

"We had chances to win the game, took a bit of a risk at the end so it got more open at times.

"Do everything in your power to win games, the focus will be that on Sunday again."

The full-time whistle has gone and it's finished 2-2.

A thrilling Premier League match saw Liverpool take the lead through Mohamed Salah, only for Aston Villa to lead at half-time.

The travelling Reds ensured they go home with a point thanks to Trent Alexander-Arnold's strike.

Liverpool remain top of the Premier League and eight points clear of Arsenal, who have a game in hand.

Villa are ninth and still in contention to qualify for Europe.

Liverpool have clawed back and are level again!

It's taken the league leaders a while to respond to their first goal but they've added their second just after the hour mark.

Aston Villa have completed the turnaround!

Some neat play on the left leads to a cross from Lucas Digne.

Ollie Watkins is the man run onto the end of it and he heads past Alisson to send Villa Park wild.

The half-time whistle blows moments later and Villa are now in control.

Aston Villa have taken just minutes to fight back.

Liverpool fail to clear a free-kick and allow John McGinn to head the ball back into the danger area.

It finally falls to Youri Tielemans, whose volley bounces into the ground and over the head of Alisson.

Liverpool very nearly restored their lead moments later but Diogo Jota wasted a great opportunity.

Mohamed Salah gives Liverpool the lead!

Andre Garcia has a moment to forget as he passes the ball straight to Diogo Jota near the Aston Villa box.

Jota then unselfishly plays it across to Salah who fires in the opener.

It's his 24th goal in the Premier League this season, and his 38th goal involvement for the campaign that sees him usurp Cristiano Ronaldo.

Salah has also set a new record for Liverpool by scoring the most away goals in a single Premier League season with 15.

Mohamed Salah could eclipse Cristiano Ronaldo in Liverpool's clash against Aston Villa.

Salah sits on an incredible 23 goals and 14 assists in the Premier League this season across 25 appearances.

His combined goal contribution total of 37 is the same as Ronaldo's best ever tally in the league.

The Portuguese legend achieved it in the 2007/08 campaign with Manchester United.

However, Salah will go one better than him with a goal or assist against Villa and do so with three months of the season to go.

Arne Slot knows that this evening's away meeting with Aston Villa is going to be a very tough one.

During the match the designated penalty taker instructed me to take the penalty; and to support the team I took responsibility in the moment to do so.

"Life's about challenges and turning pain into power which I'll continue to do."

Giorgi Mamardashvili might not be impressing Liverpool fans keeping a key eye on his services as his struggles at Valencia continue.

The Georgian goalkeeper was one of just two signings Arne Slot made upon his Anfield arrival last summer alongside Federico Chiesa.

Liverpool signed the Euro 2024 star for around £26million and immediately loaned him back to Valencia for the current campaign.

The 24-year-old made a name for himself at Euro 2024, impressing as Georgia reached the round of 16 in their first ever major tournament.

Mamardashvili played a key role in Germany, ending the group stage having made 20 saves - seven more than any other goalkeeper - including 11 in a 1-1 draw against Czechia, for which he was awarded the Player of the Match award.

However, he has managed just five clean sheets en route to letting in 28 goals in 20 La Liga appearances this term, with Valencia languishing in the relegation zone.

Mamardashvili is statistically one of the worst goalkeepers in La Liga this season with the 2nd lowest save percentage with 61.5 per cent.

That is just 0.4 percent higher than much-maligned former Liverpool goalkeeper Adrian, albeit the 38-year-old has played far few matches at Real Betis.

In contrast, Alisson Becker is at 71.2 per cent in his 17 Premier League appearances, with Caoimhín Kelleher, the man shown the exit door by Mamardashvili's imminent transfer, at 71 per cent from his eight top-flight showings.

Erik ten Hag's sacking at Manchester United cost the club a fortune - with the club publishing their Q2 fiscal report today.

The Dutchman was dismissed by United at the end of October following a run of just one win in eight matches in all competitions.

Man United have confirmed that there total operating expenses for the second quarter of 2024 were £196.4million.

Exceptional items for that period were a cost of £14.5m, relating to costs associated with sacking Ten Hag and various members of staff.

Ten Hag, who agreed to extend his contract at the club until 2026 in the summer, won two trophies during his spell at Old Trafford.

He delivered FA Cup and Carabao Cup success, but a dismal start to the season was enough for United to move for Ruben Amorim.

Manchester United flop Antony has shared the secret behind his remarkable return to form out on loan at Real Betis.

The Brazilian was the most expensive signing under former Man United manager Erik ten Hag at £85million, and the second on the club's all time list behind Paul Pogba.

A goal on his debut against Arsenal in September 2022 proved to be a huge false dawn for the winger.

He went on to manage just 11 more with only five assists from 96 appearances and was left out in the cold by Ruben Amorim.

In 2023/24, it took Antony until his 23rd outing in all competitions to end a 31-game goal drought - which came against Newport.

In the Premier League, he finished with only a single goal and assist from 29 appearances and even had to deputise as a left-back.

His only goal in the 2024/25 campaign for United before joining Betis last month was a penalty scored in a 7-0 victory over League One side Barnsley in the Carabao Cup.

However, Antony has hit the ground running in Spain - bagging three goals and one assist in just four games since joining the La Liga side.

“The most important thing is that I have found myself again.
