Mikel Merino said Arsenal are not thinking about the Premier League title after falling nine points behind leaders Liverpool.
Sunday's 1-1 draw with Chelsea at Stamford Bridge saw Mikel Arteta's side lose further ground at the top as their winless run in the league extended to four matches.
Runners-up in each of the last two seasons, the team had been tipped to go one better and end a 21-year wait to be crowned champions but those odds have lengthened by the week since last tasting a victory on October 5.
A second-half rocket from Chelsea's Pedro Neto cancelled out Gabriel Martinelli's opener to leave little margin for error when the league resumes after the international break.
"Personally I don't think about the title," said Merino, a second-half replacement for Declan Rice who played despite suffering from a broken toe.
"Right now we're at a moment where we have to think about the next step, the next training session, the next game and don't look too much ahead of ourselves.
"The small steps are the ones that are going to build the long run."
Arsenal have already dropped 14 points this season from their 11 matches, the same number that Manchester City dropped in the whole of their title-winning season in 2017/18.
At least 90 points has been required to be crowned champions in six of the least eight campaigns, though recent history gives reason for optimism for the ailing Gunners.
Last season a mid-winter crash that brought back-to-back defeats against West Ham and Fulham was followed by an electric run in which they won 16 of their final 18 games from January onwards.

If Manchester City's medical staff thought they might get a bit of a breather during the November international break, they were wrong.
Jeremy Doku became the fifth City star to have withdrawn from national team duties on Monday as the club's casualty ward continues to mount.
Doku was due to join Belgium's squad for their upcoming fixtures but will spend the November window in Manchester having missed out on City's 2-1 loss to Brighton with a quad issue.
Phil Foden and Jack Grealish were also pulled out of England's squad ahead of their Nations League fixtures against Greece and Ireland.
Matheus Nunes and Manuel Akanji are the other two who were withdrawn from the Portugal and Switzerland camps respectively on Monday as well.
With those five stars out, it means a staggering 11 City players will be absent from the international stage in November due to injuries.
Rodri, who won the Ballon d'Or, is almost certain to miss the rest of the season after he ruptured his ACL against Arsenal in September.
Oscar Bobb has not featured since he fractured his leg in pre-season, but Guardiola hopes the Norwegian talent's return is not too far away.
Star midfielder Kevin De Bruyne came off the bench for City against Brighton but is still not fully fit.
Star defenders Nathan Ake, John Stones and Ruben Dias all missed the loss to Brighton as well.
However, Guardiola will hope the international break can allow most of the 11 injured players to recover in time for City's match against Tottenham on November 23.

Mark Chapman should replace Gary Lineker as Match of the Day presenter.
If not, why?"
Rogers is the third Villa player called up by interim England boss Lee Carsley for the November internationals as defender Ezri Konsa and striker Ollie Watkins were also included.
The 22-year-old could make his senior international debut as soon as Thursday when England make the trip to face Greece.

Manchester United have confirmed Ruud van Nistelrooy will not form part of Ruben Amorim's coaching staff and has departed the club.
"Ruud is, and always will be, a Manchester United legend," a club statement read.

The former Red Devils marksman went unbeaten in his four games in charge, beginning with a 5-2 thumping of Leicester City in the Carabao Cup.
Van Nistelrooy followed that up with a 1-1 draw at Old Trafford against Chelsea, a 2-0 win over PAOK in the Europa League and a 3-0 victory over Leicester in the Premier League.
He departs with United 13th in the Premier League, but only four points behind third-placed Chelsea.
The make-up of Amorim's backroom staff is due to be confirmed in the coming days.

Casemiro has hit back at critics of his form by insisting he has had a good season so far for Manchester United.
The Brazilian sparked debate that his top-level career was over after a disastrous display in defeat by Liverpool on September 1.
The former Real Madrid star was largely at fault for two of Liverpool’s goals in his side’s 3-0 loss and hooked at half-time.
He was subsequently dropped by former manager Erik ten Hag, but he has since battled back into the Man United starting XI.
The 32-year-old continued his recent upturn in form with another assured display in the 3-0 victory over Leicester on Sunday.
"Well, everyone can see can't they?
Arsenal are not progressing the way they should.”

Trent Alexander-Arnold will not be available to play for England due to the hamstring injury suffered in Liverpool's win over Aston Villa, talkSPORT understands.
Alexander-Arnold was forced off after just 25 minutes of Saturday's 2-0 victory and his absence is a blow to England's hopes of winning their Nations League group.
The Reds vice-captain has established himself as a vital player for his country since Lee Carsley took over the Three Lions on an interim basis.
Alexander-Arnold has started all four matches of the Carsley era, winning the Player of the Match award in three of those games.
Interim head coach Carsley is also sweating on the fitness of Arsenal pair Declan Rice and Bukayo Saka after both asked to be substituted during Sunday's 1-1 draw at Chelsea.

David Moyes is eyeing a return to a Premier League dugout with several managers facing serious pressure, talkSPORT understands.
Crystal Palace, Wolves, Southampton and Leicester could all be possible destinations for the former Man United and Everton boss.
Moyes is currently without a job having left his previous role with West Ham at the end of last season.
The Scottish boss was replaced by Julen Lopetegui, who has led the Hammers to just three wins in 11 matches so far.

Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta will be fretting over the fitness of Martin Odegaard after he was called up for Norway duty this week.
Odegaard missed two months of football after suffering ankle ligament damage during his country's 2-1 win over Austria at the start of September.
The Gunners captain finally made his return from injury late on in the 1-0 Champions League defeat to Inter Milan on Wednesday.
Odegaard was then deemed fit enough to start the 1-1 draw with Chelsea and came through the contest unscathed.
But Norway coach Ola Solbakken has now confirmed that the 25-year-old will travel to join up with his international teammates.
"We'll see how it turns out.
I'm not naive, I know it's going to be very different, very difficult.
"I'm at peace now, I can focus on my new job and I'm looking forward to starting tomorrow.
"I know it will be difficult to reproduce what I have here anywhere else, but there are other places with different exposure and pressure."

The Tractor Boys secured a first top-flight victory since 2002 after a shock 2-1 win away at Champions League hopefuls Spurs.
Following the match, the club poked fun at the north Londoners on social media.
Ipswich posted a photo of Tottenham's Maddison tugging the shirt of Omari Hutchinson and took the opportunity to share a link to buy the third kit their player was wearing to their followers.
The promoted side light-heartedly wrote alongside the post: "It's much easier to get a Hutchinson shirt by going to our online store."

Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta has given a worrying update on the fitness of England duo Bukayo Saka and Declan Rice.
Rice was a surprise starter at Stamford Bridge having broken his toe against Newcastle.
The £105million midfielder missed the trip to San Siro in the Champions League in midweek after being unable to train.
However, Rice played through the pain barrier this evening but hobbled off after 70 minutes.
Ten minutes later Saka followed suit after being on the wrong end of a hefty challenge from Marc Cucurella.
Responding to the injuries picked up by both Saka and Rice, Mikel Arteta told Sky Sports: “They don’t look good to be fair.
"They weren’t able to finish the game, not good.”
talkSPORT understands Saka and Rice are both doubtful for England duty during the November international break.
Arteta confirmed to talkSPORT's chief football correspondent Alex Crook that the Arsenal duo both asked to be substituted off.

Chelsea defender Marc Cucurella was awarded the Player of the Match award - mostly for his battles up against Bukayo Saka.
The Spaniard was asked post-match by Sky Sports what he has to ensure he does to make sure he can nullify the Arsenal winger.
Pedro Neto butted in to joke: 'Be Marc Cucurella!'
The latter was much more humble when given the microphone as, on Saka, he said: "He is a top player, we have played a lot of times.
