GAME ON!

Adam Armstrong doesn't actually score the penalty as he hits a rubbish effort straight at Caoimhin Kelleher.

But it rebounds to striker, and he keeps his calm to fire into the net.

All of a sudden, we have a contest on our hands at St Mary's.

The Saints have a spot kick!

Virgil van Dijk loses possession in midfield.

Tyler Dibling collects and races towards the box.

Andy Robertson stands in his way and trips him in the box.

The referee points to the spot, and VAR has a look.

But they can't determine if the contact happened in or outside the area, so the referee's decision to award the penalty stands.

The Premier League Match Centre also clarified the decision.

In a statement, they said: "The referee’s call of penalty for the challenge by Robertson on Dibling is checked and confirmed by VAR, who deemed there was no conclusive evidence that the contact occurred outside the penalty area."

Adam Armstrong to take…

Flynn Downes nearly makes amends immediately!

The Saints come forward and work the ball into the box.

It drops for Downes, and he rifles a shot at goal that Caoimhin Kelleher tips away for a corner, which comes to nothing.

Meanwhile, Adam Lallana's afternoon is over.

He pulls up and is replaced by Joe Aribo, receiving a good reception from both sets of supporters.

SAME OLD SOUTHAMPTON!

Dominik Szoboszlai is the goalscorer, but this is shambolic from the Saints.

Alex McCarthy gathers a Conor Bradley shot and rolls the ball into Mateus Fernandes on the edge of the box.

He loses it, but Flynn Downes has time to clear.

His clearance is pathetic and drops to Szoboszlai, who opens up his body and curls a strike in off the post.

That's a big goal for the midfielder who has carried his international form into this game.

Meanwhile, Perry Groves was less than impressed.

Speaking on talkSPORT he said: "It was so basically bad.

It was ridiculous."

It is now seven errors leading to goals for Southampton this season, we are in November...

Adam Lallana might have got away with one there.

The former Liverpool man sees a loose ball in midfield and rushes in to collect, but Ryan Gravenberch beats him to it.

Lallana clatters into the Dutchman and sends him flying seven feet into the air, while Gravenberch's screams are audible.

The referee decides that it's a challenge worthy of a yellow card, and VAR agrees.

You can file that one as a 'robust challenge'.

Big save!

Cody Gakpo finds space on the left and cuts inside.

He curls a cross over Ryan Fraser to the far post where Mohamed Salah is waiting.

The Egyptian rings the ball down and lashes in a strike that Alex McCarthy throws himself at.

It's an excellent block from the goalkeeper to keep this game goalless.

Mohamed Salah and Conor Bradley combine down the right as the latter gets to the byline.

He whips in a cross that Alex McCarthy does well to palm away to the edge of the box.

Dominik Szoboszlai arrives and connects with a half-volley that he wildly lashes over the bar.

Penalty appeal waved away.

Adam Armstrong beats Ibrahima Konate on the left and looks to get in the box.

The Frenchman catches up with the striker and places a hand into his back, sending him sprawling to the floor.

The home side scream for a spot kick, but it was very soft and outside of the box, so the referee and VAR say no.

Correct decision.

Chances at both ends.

First shot of the game goes the way of Southampton as Taylor Harwood-Bellis rolls a lovely pass into Mateus Fernandes.

He has Adam Armstrong making a run in behind, but Fernandes ignores him and hits a dipping strike that Caoimhin Kelleher gathers.

The Reds break and Dominik Szoboszlai charges through the non-existent Saints midfield and flicks a pass into Mohamed Salah.

He takes a touch and curls a shot at goal that Alex McCarthy tips behind.

The resulting corner comes to nothing.

Right, we are underway on the south coast.

It's top versus bottom, and it's a big chance for Liverpool to move further clear at the top of the Premier League table.

The Saints are in their traditional red and white stripes, and they are lining up in a back five, not a back four.

Liverpool are in their all change black strip.

The Manchester United starting XI under Ruben Amorim remains a total mystery, but we could see a 16-year-old on the bench.

Godwill Kukonki has travelled with the Red Devils to Portman Road and has a chance of being among the substitutes.

The Man United Under-18 man is a tall, left-footed defender who can play at left-back and centre-back.

He has been at the club since he was nine and has impressed in first-team training this week.

If he does make the bench, it would be a very proud moment for this young man and his family.

Ahead of Liverpool facing Southampton this afternoon in the Premier League, their manager Arne Slot has warned the Reds about the Saints.

On paper, it should be straightforward for Liverpool on the south coast, with the Saints 20th and the Reds top.

However, Slot thinks Southampton have performed better than their league position suggests.

And given they can move eight points clear or Manchester City with victor here, he wants full focus from his team.

Speaking ahead of the game to Sky Sports, he said: "The dropping of points by City doesn't mean that much to me.

"We have to get a result, but it's not going to be easy because Southampton are a team that have played much better than the league table shows us."

He also revealed that Alexis Mac Allister and some of the other South American players are on the bench because they arrived back from international duty late.

"They played on Wednesday evening.

"They could have jet lag and have had a long trip."

"It's not the only reason, but it is one of them."

So, it' finally the day that Ruben Amorim takes charge of a Premier League match.

The new Manchester United manager spoke very well at his first press conference, exuding calmness.

He was also extremely confident in his players and his abilities to make Man United a top team once more.

The former Braga player has a very clear and defined style of play, which the Red Devils stars are going to have to learn.

Amorim almost exclusively plays a 3-4-3 formation, which is a style that has worked perfectly for Antonio Conte and Thomas Tuchel in the past.

But Amorim's is a very different 3-4-3, and here, we've broken down exactly what Man United and Premier League supporters can expect to see from this new-look Red Devils side.

Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta admits it is becoming difficult to resist the temptation to throw teenage hot-shot Ethan Nwaneri into the title race.

The 17-year-old became Arsenal's second-youngest Premier League goal-scorer when he climbed off the bench to hit the third in the 3-0 win over Nottingham Forest.

The youngest, Cesc Fabregas, went on to do pretty well, winning the FA Cup with the Gunners, two Premier League titles at Chelsea as well as becoming a European and world champion with Spain.

Nwaneri became the youngest player in Premier League history when he came on during Arsenal's 3-0 win at Brentford in September 2022, aged just 15 years and 181 days.

But he is still yet to start a top-flight match and Saturday's cameo was only his seventh appearance in the league since his debut more than two years ago.

Arteta insists he will continue to tread carefully with the exciting youngster, who does not turn 18 until March.

"I am always tempted," said Arteta.

It's back to business in the Premier League."

Although exiting the flagship football highlights programme, the 63-year-old will remain with the BBC after both parties agreed to a contract extension through to the 2026 World Cup.

He will host BBC Sport's coverage of the FA Cup in the 2025-26 campaign and continue presenting the Match of the Day: Top 10 podcast for BBC Sounds, which will also host The Rest Is Football podcast, produced by Lineker's Goalhanger Podcasts, with one episode released on the platform each week.

The BBC has said future plans for Match Of The Day would be 'announced in due course' with Mark Chapman, Alex Scott, Kelly Cates and Gabby Logan among those being tipped as candidates to replace him.

Ruben Amorim says he is 'the smiling one' but Manchester United's new head coach warned he can be ruthless when he needs to be.

The 39-year-old takes charge for the first time in Sunday's Premier League trip to promoted Ipswich having been confirmed as Erik ten Hag's successor at the beginning of November.

Amorim has made a positive impression since starting work at the United in an international fortnight that ended with an impressive first appearance in front of the media.

The Portuguese was gregarious, engaging and smiley throughout Friday's press conference but that warmth comes with a ruthlessness edge if players do not adhere to his approach.

"You can be the same person," head coach Amorim said.

"Be a positive person that can understand this is one place to be, then there is the dressing room, there are some places to have fun, there are some places to work hard.

"So, I can be ruthless when I have to be.

If there is someone just thinking about himself, I will be a different person.

"I'm not that type of guy that wants to show that he is the boss.

"They will feel it in the small details, that I can be the smiling one but then when we have a job to do I will be a different person, and they understand that."

Jamie O'Hara was full of praise for James Maddison's performance against Man City, saying 'he's answered his critics'.

"He's scored two today, he's answered his critics," O'Hara told Game-Day Phone-In.

"He's come under a bit of pressure, he lost his place in the England squad, hasn't been playing, been getting dragged week-in, week-out.

"But he's put in a top, top performance so far.

I think it just furthers hopefully our progression."

WHAT HAVE WE JUST WITNESSED!

Tottenham have turned up at the Etihad and dismantled Manchester City, ending their 52-game unbeaten home record emphatically.

It is the worst home defeat for City under Pep Guardiola, while the Spaniard has now lost three Premier League games in a row for the first time.

Overall, it's five consecutive defeats for Man City.

You have to remember that Spurs were without their two star centre-backs.

But goals from James Maddison, Pedro Porro and Brennan Johnson sealed a famous win for Tottenham.

YOU DON'T SEE THIS VERY OFTEN!

The two substitutes Timo Werner and Brennan Johnson combine, and send the travelling Spurs fans delirious.

Jack Grealish gifts possession to Werner, and he bursts past him down the left.

He looks up and rolls a pass across the box, and there is Johnson to slide and put the ball in.

This has been a battering!

Bit of a flashpoint as Kevin De Bruyne is booked for a late tackle on Pape Mate Sarr.

The incident happened after De Bruyne slipped Erling Haaland in on goal.

He fired in a shot that was saved, which rebounded towards De Bruyne, but as he swung his leg, he made no contact with the ball and wiped Sarr out.

The Spurs midfielder wasn't happy and leaped up to confront De Bruyne, leading to both men going into the book.
