Wayne Rooney thinks Manchester United look "lost" and "scared" on the pitch and that "10 to 15 players need to leave the club".
Former United forward Rooney - the club's record goalscorer - said on Stick to Football, when asked if there was a way back with the current squad: "No, I don't think so.
It's going to be based on what we know he can do, and for the last 18 months hasn't done, yet the last six weeks, he has done.
"Because in those wide areas, [Ethan] Nwaneri from Arsenal if [Bukayo] Saka is out - it's an area that actually we've got a lot of players that can play on that left-hand side, in those wide areas.
"You can only have so many players in the squad, but if he turns up in the squad, I wouldn't be unhappy about it, I wouldn't be disappointed.
"I want to see the very best version of Rashford in an England shirt, and in an England shirt, when he turns up, he's a formidable character."

Chelsea's Levi Colwill has revealed that he is hoping for an England call-up with Thomas Tuchel set to pick his first team on Friday.
People have used to for their own purposes to suggest I was making a bold claim, but I wasn't, I was stating a fact.
"If that doesn't happen this year then I can't say it anymore, but what was I supposed to say?
"Yes I always win one in the second year but here it won't happen - is that what people wanted to hear?
"Maybe we defy the odds and I do win something this year, but people will say 'it wasn't great that you made such a bold claim' people just use it the way they want to.
"I'm proud of the fact that wherever I've been I've won things and I wouldn't be sitting here if I didn't."

A shocking statistic has emerged from Liverpool's defeat to PSG last night, with Andy Robertson the target.
The Scot played in the penalty shoot-out defeat that sent Liverpool out of the Champions League at the last 16 stage.
To make matters worse for him, it was his birthday, and not a happy one.
In fact, Robertson has played for the Reds three times on his birthday, and lost all of them.
The other defeats were against Atletico Madrid in 2020 and Bournemouth in 2023.
Conversely, the date is a special one for PSG, with captain Marquinhos seen chanting 'March 11th!' in the tunnel post-match.
That's because some of the Parisiens' biggest results in the competition have also come on Robertson's birthday.
In 2020 they overturned a deficit to Borussia Dortmund, while in 2015 they racked up an incredible win over Chelsea.
Supporters even joked on social media that March 11 should become a public holiday in the French captial.

New quotes have emerged from Anfield regarding Liverpool captain Virgil van Dijk.
The 2019 Champions League winner saw his side exit the competition at the last 16 stage with a penalty shoot-out defeat to PSG and after caused some controversy.
Van Dijk, who is an impending free agent, was seen chatting to PSG owner Nasser Al-Khelaifi and sporting director Luis Campos post-match, fuelling speculation about his future.
Addressing his future in comments that have only emerged today, he said: "I still have no idea at the moment.
Bring in an old striker like Robbie Fowler who spends time with him.
"Going through what you do on the pitch, just rehearse it, and I think it's a lot about that muscle memory, the best strikers don't think, they just hit it.
"Whenever I see him it's always power, unless he has to react."

Manchester United have had two injury boosts and one blow ahead of their season-defining Europa League clash with Real Sociedad.
Ruben Amorim's side face the LaLiga outfit at Old Trafford after a 1-1 draw in the first leg.
Out of the other cups and nowhere near the European places in the Premier League, the Europa is now all-or-nothing for United.
Ahead of the Thursday game Mason Mount and Manuel Ugarte both trained with their teammates in a boost to Amorim.
However, Leny Yoro missed out and looks unlikely to play.
Ugarte missed the team's last two games and Mount hasn't played since December.
United's other absentees are, Altay Bayindir, Tom Heaton, Luke Shaw, Lisandro Martinez, Jonny Evans, Kobbie Mainoo and Amad Diallo.

Wales manager Craig Bellamy has paid tribute to Aaron Ramsey after announcing that the Cardiff midfielder will miss the team's upcoming World Cup qualifiers.
The former Arsenal and Juventus man was set to return after his last game in September, but was injured just hours before Bellamy's squad announcement.
Discussing the player, Bellamy said: "I spoke to him this morning and it's a tough one for him, it's tough.
"I've got to be honest, football wise, I don't care, him as the person is more important to me, I've known him since he was five.
"The person he is I care about that more and the extend of the injury we do not know.
"I think he tried to be a little bit apologetic towards me and the first thought in my head was 'don't you ever apologise to me'.
"I couldn't be more proud of him as a person, his playing career has been incredible, he's actually been one of my favourite players.
"What he's done for club football, his country and young people in Wales, I'm beyond proud to know him to for me it's more about him as a person, so we'll just let the next couple of days settle down."

Mohammed Salah's Ballon d'Or chances have taken a knock after exiting the Champions League, according to the bookmakers.
The Egyptian was unable to lift the Reds past PSG, who beat them to a quarter-final berth with a shoot-out win at Anfield.
Salah is set to have the greatest season in Premier League history when it comes to goals and assists, matching the record of 44 with nine games to go.
However, out of Europe, he has fewer chances to add to his goal total of 27, while competitors Harry Kane (21) and Ousmane Dembele (20) creeping up in the European Golden Boot race.
On top of that, Barcelona captain and talisman Raphinha is also being touted for the prestigious award, with Thierry Henry saying: "Raphinha is ahead.
"For me he is the best because of the form he has shown in the Champions League.
"He did not get up to speed with the game at all when he came on as a sub.
"He didn't seem to know where to run or when to run, he wasn't playing well at all and let a ball run out of play for no reason - he wasn't good.
"So why he's stepping up second to take a penalty is beyond me, you've got Cody Gakpo who's just come on as a sub, Harvey Elliott, if I was him I'd be fuming.
"I think Slot made some big mistakes last night and Nunez taking the second penalty was probably the biggest of all."

Arsenal star William Saliba has revealed teammate Gabriel Magalhaes pipped him into getting the shirt of his favourite defender - Sergio Ramos.
The Spanish legend came up against the Gunners last season in the Champions League group stage, with Arsenal beat Sevilla away 2-1.
And Saliba has revealed he was gunning to receive his jersey, but it wasn't to be.
Speaking ahead of his side's last-16 second leg clash against PSV, Saliba was asked who his favourite defender is.
To which said: "We played against Sergio Ramos last season, I wanted his shirt, but Gabriel wanted it so badly, so he gave it to Gabriel!
"For me, he’s in the best in history.
[Virgil] van Dijk is unbelievable, Gabriel as well."
Regarded as one of the world's best defenders, Saliba then declared what he has to improve on his game to be considered as the greatest of his generation.
He remarked: "My concentration, I have to score more and I have to help my team win some trophies.
"When you win trophies, you can say, ‘I’m the best.' I have to push and demand more from myself to help the team."

Nottingham Forest have confirmed they are planning on doubling the capacity in a rebuild of the Peter Taylor Stand.
The Reds have stated their ambitious plans could take place next season to extend seating from 5,000 to 10,000 with the stand boasting Champions League quality facilities.
A statement on Tuesday read: "It remains the club’s ambition to redevelop the Peter Taylor Stand and there is a material prospect that we could start that work during the 2025/26 season.
"If that is the case, we will consult with season card holders who have seats in the Peter Taylor Stand regarding their relocation, if and when appropriate.”
It was in 2019 when Forest first when public in their plans to modernise the 60-year-old stand.
As it stands, Forest are on course to be back playing in Europe's premier competition as they sit in third spot in the Premier League table.

Declan Rice came under fire for his overzealous reaction to a match-saving tackle during Arsenal’s 1-1 draw at Old Trafford.
The Gunners midfielder was in the thick of the action at Old Trafford on Sunday having netted his side’s equaliser 16 minutes from time.
And he was at it again when with six minutes remaining as Rice got Arsenal out of jail with a sliding challenge to dispossess United striker Rasmus Hojlund with the goal gaping.
The Denmark international had just David Raya to beat to score what would likely have been the winning goal, but Rice intervened to help Mikel Arteta’s side hold on to a valuable point.
The England international subsequently threw a wild fist pump after clearing the danger but not everybody shared Rice’s passion, not least talkSPORT’s Adrian Durham who was left a little perplexed by his reaction.
Durham was covering the game alongside Danny Murphy live on air and it’s fair to say he wasn't impressed as he likened it to a mismatch between Tyson Fury and Jake Paul.
“When he celebrated the tackle on Rasmus Hojlund, now that's like Tyson Fury celebrating a win over Jake Paul,” Durham said.
“I think Declan Rice needs to set his standards and his targets higher,” he added.
