Erik ten Hag could be set to land an imminent return to management after leaving Manchester United.
The Dutchman was sacked by the Red Devils in October after just over two years in charge at Old Trafford.
Ten Hag has since remained away from the dugout but could now be handed a path back into management.
Borussia Dortmund sacked manager Nuri Sahin on Wednesday morning following their Champions League defeat to Bologna.
A statement from sports director Lars Ricken read: "We value Nuri Sahin and his work very much, we hoped for a long-term collaboration and until the end we had hoped that we could achieve a sporting turnaround together.
"After four defeats in a row, due to only one win in the last nine games and currently tenth in the Bundesliga table, we have unfortunately lost faith in being able to achieve our sporting goals in the current constellation.
"This decision hurts me personally, but it was unavoidable after the game in Bologna."
Ten Hag has been widely reported to be the favourite to replace Sahin at Signal Iduna Park.

One often brings two, and that's the case when it comes to Nottingham Forest contract extensions.
The Reds confirmed they had tied down star centre-back Murillo until the summer of 2029 and now it appears they've convinced another key member to stick around.
According to The Athletic, Chris Wood is on the verge of agreeing a possible two-year extension with Forest.
The report states a verbal agreement among all parties is in place and will be 'finalised soon.'
Wood is enjoying a dream season up front for Forest and sits fourth in the Premier League golden boot race having scored 14 goals.
Only Erling Haaland, Mohamed Salah and Alexander Isak have scored more.
Woods' tally of 14 accounts for 42 per cent of Forest's Premier League goals this season, underlining his importance to Nuno Esperito Santo's team.
The Kiwi international is in a rich vein of form at the moment having scored in his last four games.
The 33-year-old will hope to continue that streak to a fifth when Forest travel down south on Saturday as they face Bournemouth, who are riding high after a 4-1 win over Newcastle.

Ipswich are in talks with Brighton over signing forward Julio Enciso on loan, talkSPORT understands.
Enciso is keen to go out and play after being limited to a handful of Premier League appearances this season and there is optimism on all sides the deal gets done.
The Paraguayan international will undergo his medical on Wednesday.
Enciso has struggled to recreate the magic from his first season at the Amex Stadium when he registered four goals and two assists at age 18.
His second campaign was derailed by a meniscus tear that restricted him to just 15 appearances in all competitions.
The 20-year-old has since struggled to break into the starting line-up under Seagulls boss Fabian Hurzeler, starting just twice in 19 games this term.
Enciso will now look to help Ipswich move away from the relegation zone.
The Tractor Boys sit in 18th on 16 points, level with 17th-placed Wolves.
Enciso's imminent arrival at Portman Road marks Ipswich's third signing of the January window.
Ben Godfrey joined on loan from Serie A side Atalanta while Jadon Philogene moved on a permanent deal from Aston Villa.

Aston Villa are about to be one defender lighter.
Turkish side Fenerbahce announced on X they had 'reached an agreement in principle' with Villa for Brazilian centre-back Diego Carlos.
Fenerbahce added Carlos 'has been invited to Istanbul for health checks and to further the transfer negotiations'.
talkSPORT understands Fenerbahce will fork out £10million to secure Carlos' services from Villa after he was identified as a top target by Jose Mourinho.
Carlos moved to Villa Park from Sevilla in 2022 for a reported £26m, meaning they will take a £16m hit on the deal.
The Brazilian got his Villa career off to a heartbreaking start when he tore his Achilles in his second appearance for the club.
However, Carlos' importance was evident in his second season at Villa as he featured in 38 games across all competitions and put in big performances to help Unai Emery's side clinch Champions League qualification.
Stuck behind Ezri Konsa and Pau Torres as Emery's first choice pairing at centre-back, Carlos is poised to join a defensive unit at Fenerbahce that includes Caglar Soyuncu and Alexander Djiku.

Nottingham Forest fans, rejoice.
The club has confirmed star centre-back Murillo has signed a new deal to remain at Forest until the summer of 2029.
"I'm very thankful and very happy that there are four more years to come," Murillo said.
"I'm thankful to everyone for the support - not just to me, but to my family as well.
"Everywhere I go, every shop, wherever it is, they treat my family and I really well.
So I'm very grateful for everything they do for myself and for the team."
Murillo has played a starring role in helping Forest become the surprise package of the Premier League season.
The imposing Brazilian has been part of a Forest backline that has conceded just 22 goals, the third-fewest in the Premier League this term .
Murillo's extension will come as a bitter blow to rivals who had looked to secure his services, one of which was Chelsea.
The Blues were interested in a swoop for the Brazilian last summer as they sought out a replacement for Thiago Silva.
Forest priced Murillo at a whopping £70million at the time but that figure will no doubt have gone up thanks to his new deal.

It's the question that's been on everyone's minds ever since Erling Haaland penned his new nine-and-a-half-year deal with Manchester City.
Did he ever consider what City's fate could be if they get the book thrown at them for the 115 charges?
Well, the Norwegian has revealed his answer.
"I haven't thought about that," Haaland said.
"I am confident the club knows what they are doing.
In the end I don't think I should speak about that too much.
"I have only been here two-and-a-half years and I'm confident the club knows what they are doing."
City's hearing into their alleged breaches of Premier League financial rules wrapped up in December as the world awaits the final verdict.
No matter what comes of it, Haaland is at the Etihad Stadium for the long haul.

West Ham are in talks with Belgian side Leuven over the signing of midfielder Ezechiel Banzuzi after having an initial offer rejected, talkSPORT understands.
The Hammers have also made enquiries to French club Monaco over Switzerland striker Breel Embolo.
Banzuzi, 19, is a Dutch under-21 international.
The Dutchman also stands at an imposing 191cm tall, so he'd represent an aerial threat for Graham Potter's side.
Banzuzi has enjoyed a breakout season with Leuven, registering one goal and five assists from 21 league appearances in Belgium.
Should Leuven sell Banzuzi to the Hammers, they stand to make a major profit given they signed him for just €1.2million (£1m) from NAC Breda in July 2023.
West Ham's pursuit of Monaco striker Embolo comes after they had a £57m bid for Aston Villa's Jhon Duran rejected on Monday.
The Hammers are in need of a fresh presence up top as Niclas Fullkrug and Michail Antonio remained sidelined with injuries.

Southampton do not want to sell Tyler Dibling this month, talkSPORT understands.
Tottenham and Newcastle are among the Premier League clubs tracking the Southampton winger.
RB Leipzig have also registered an interest in the teenager, but Dibling is not pushing for a January departure despite stalling on signing a new deal.
Despite being just 18 years of age, Dibling has shone in an otherwise poor Southampton side.
Dibling has bagged four goals and two assists from his 24 appearances across all competitions for the Saints.
Two of those goals came for Southampton in their 3-0 win over Swansea City in the third round of the FA Cup.
The talented teen's contract at St.
But tomorrow will come too early for him."
