The Premier League has announced a major change ahead of the upcoming league game between Liverpool and Aston Villa.
The table-topping Reds travel to Villa Park to take on Unai Emery’s side on Wednesday night, with kick-off set for 7.30pm.
The game is set to go ahead in midweek because Liverpool is participating in the UEFA Champions League and has qualified for the Carabao Cup final.
Arne Slot’s side come into the tie on the back of a scrappy 2-1 win over Wolves, which ensured they remained top of the league table.
They lead Arsenal by seven points but now have the chance to go ten points clear in the title race.
The match at Villa Park on Wednesday will also be a chance to see a new ball in action for the first time.
This is according to the Premier League, which has announced that Liverpool’s clash against Aston Villa will be the first to use the new and final Nike match ball of the season.
Nike is celebrating its 25th year as the league’s official ball supplier, and their new Nike Flight Ball will be used for games between now and the end of the 2024/25 Premier League season.
The ball is a reimagined design of the iconic Nike Total 90s football.
What the Premier League said about the new ball
The Premier League revealed this in an official statement on their website.
“As the Premier League heads into spring, the third 2024/25 Premier League x Nike Flight Ball makes its way on to pitches for the business end of the season,” the statement said.
“This launch continues to celebrate Nike’s 25th year as the Official Ball Supplier for the Premier League, with an iconic re-imagined third ball – inspired by Nike Total 90 footballs of the past with its innovation of the present.”
They also explained the modern-day technology behind the ball, adding:
“Built with Aerowsculpt technology with grooves debased into the casing, this allows the air to travel seamlessly around the ball, delivering truer flight,” they said?
“It is crafted with shorter seem length to allow for a sweeter touch.”
They added: “The Nike Flight Premier League ball will make its debut appearance this season on Wednesday 19 February, when Aston Villa host Liverpool.”
