Liverpool could secure their record-equalling 20th English top-flight title this weekend when they host Tottenham Hotspur at Anfield, with the Premier League trophy tantalizingly within reach.
The Reds’ path to glory hinges not only on their own performance but also on Arsenal’s midweek clash with Crystal Palace.
Liverpool (79 points from 33 games) need just three points from their remaining five matches to mathematically guarantee the title.
However, the timeline for celebration could accelerate depending on Arsenal’s result against Crystal Palace on Wednesday:
If Arsenal lose: The Gunners would cap their maximum points at 78, handing Liverpool the title before Sunday’s kickoff.
If Arsenal draw or win: A Liverpool victory over Tottenham would still seal the crown, moving them to 82 points—unreachable for Arsenal (max 81).
This sets up a potential coronation at Anfield, a scenario captain Virgil van Dijk has emphasized as the preferred option after the pandemic-affected 2020 title win.
Liverpool are unbeaten in 14 home league games against Spurs since 2011, including February’s 4-0 League Cup rout?
Their high press has consistently overwhelmed Tottenham’s defense, which has conceded 48 league goals this term.
Ange Postecoglou has already confessed that he was rotating his team during their 2-1 defeat to Nottingham Forest on Monday with Liverpool in mind, saying post-match that he took off the likes of Cristian Romero and Micky van de Ven to ensure they are fit for Anfield:
“I felt that there was no need to play more than 45 minutes today,” he said.
“I just felt that if it was Sunday we probably wouldn’t have played them, but on a Monday, especially for Micky because he’s been playing just one game a week, we need to build him up because he’s in a really good place at the moment so I thought 45 minutes for both of them would be beneficial.”
Meanwhile, the Premier League have announced the match officials for what could be the title-clinching clash.
Tom Bramall has been confirmed as the on-field referee, and he will be assisted by Simon Bennett and Dan Robathan.
Chris Kavanagh is the fourth official while Craig Pawson will man the VAR booth in Stockley Park to be assisted by Darren Cann.
Bramall has only officiated one Liverpool game – a 3-1 win over Bournemouth in the first home game of last season.
Bramall controversially sent off Mac Allister in the 58th minute for a challenge on Ryan Christie.
The decision was widely criticized, including by Jürgen Klopp, who called it a “clear mistake.”
An independent FA panel later overturned the red card, ruling it “not a clear and obvious error” but acknowledging the on-field call was harsh.
