The Premier League is reportedly considering making a major change to the summer and winter transfer windows.

The transfer window has been a major part of the Premier League since its formation.

Teams often use these opportunities to strengthen their squads and sometimes weaken those of their rivals.

However, Liverpool has been one of the least active clubs over the last two transfer windows.

The Reds have spent the least amount of money between July 1st 2024, when the 2024/25 summer transfer window opened and now.

Federico Chiesa and Girogi Mamardashvili are the only senior players that Liverpool have signed this season, with no additions in the winter despite links with several players.

Oil-rich Manchester City splashed the most cash on new players, including signing Liverpool-linked Omar Marmoush.

The Citizens have been struggling this season, but Pep Guardiola has moved to fix the issues in his squad with almost £200m in new signings.

Helped by City’s riches, the Premier League once again dominated the market in this January window with a net spend of €320 million (£266 million), more than twice that of the next highest, which was Saudi Arabia with €142 million.

Indeed, the league has been a constant top spender in the market, usually taking the best players in the market.

However, there could be a tweak on how transfer business is done in the coming seasons, according to the latest report by The Telegraph.

The changes the Premier League is considering making

According to The Telegraph, the Premier League is considering making substantial changes to the current transfer window model that runs for about two months in the summer and a month in the winter.

Under the current arrangement, the summer transfer typically opens in the first week of  July, running through the last day of August, while the winter window typically runs through the month of January.

However, Premier League clubs are considering reducing the number of months in the window in a bid to make clubs conclude deals before the season begins.

“Premier League clubs are considering reducing the winter transfer window to two weeks and closing the summer transfer window before the beginning of the season,” The Telegraph wrote.

“The proposal to shorten the summer window from its current length has been raised in talks between clubs since the end of the most recent window on Monday, which ran from January 1 to February 3.

The aim is that it minimises disruption to managers and their squads once the games begin.

“The debate over the timing of transfer windows happened at a meeting of sporting directors of the 20 Premier League clubs on Thursday.

The owners and chief executives will decide whether the proposal has any chance of going to a vote.”

The Premier League recently trialled a shortened window in the 2018 and 2019 seasons, with English clubs concluding their deals before the season started.

However, this caused a major disruption among teams and was ultimately abandoned because other European leagues kept their window open until the end of August.

“In general, the curtailed transfer windows of 2018 and 2019 were felt to put Premier League clubs at a disadvantage to competitors around the world who could drive a better price on deals because of the more limited scope their English counterparts had to complete.”

However, the recent report claims that there has been renewed consideration for a return to the former arrangement.

“The chief argument concerns the integrity of the game and how the movement of players during the season might affect that,” The Telegraph report added.

“There is a Premier League shareholders’ meeting next week when owners, chief executives, and other key figures meet and vote on the timing of the closing of the window?

There is likely to be a discussion with fellow top European leagues about aligning the closure of their windows in the summer, although ultimately, that will be a choice for those countries.”

Meanwhile, the Premier League recently discussed their plans to introduce Semi-Automated Offside Technology (SAOT) this season.
