Liverpool are halfway to the perfect weekend in the Premier League even with a clash against Manchester City to come.

Arne Slot's side dropped points earlier this week against Aston Villa which opened the door for title rivals Arsenal to potentially strike.

Prior to that game, the Reds just about got the better of Wolves and had missed out on a big Merseyside Derby win against Everton just a few days earlier.



In that time, the Gunners played just once with two late goals away at Leicester City helping them keep pace.

Up against West Ham on Saturday, Mikel Arteta's side had the chance to put some pressure on Liverpool before their trip to Etihad Stadium but rather embarrassingly failed to do so.

Jarrod Bowen scored the only goal of the game which saw Arsenal beaten on their own patch for the second consecutive season by the Hammers.

Their afternoon was made that much worse by the dismissal of Myles Lewis-Skelly for denying a goal-scoring opportunity.

The teenager was initially shown a yellow card for his foul on Mohammed Kudus but after VAR intervention, Craig Pawson upgraded it to a red.

With the technology firmly involved in the final outcome of the decision, the Premier League Match Centre on X released a statement explaining why he was sent off.

"VAR checked the referee's call of yellow card to Lewis-Skelly for a challenge on [Mohammed] Kudus, deeming it denial of an obvious goal-scoring opportunity due to the goalkeeper's position and there being no covering defender, therefore recommended an on-field review.

The referee then upgraded the yellow to a red card," it said.

The defeat has left Arsenal on 53 points which has given Liverpool the chance to extend the gap up to double figures if they beat Man City on Sunday.
