Mikel Arteta admits it's "inevitable" bitter memories of last season's Premier League defeat at Newcastle will come flooding back for his team today.

The Gunners return to St James' Park in our afternoon commentary game - the site of a defeat that proved damaging to their race against Man City for the title.

Anthony Gordon bundled home the only goal of the game a year ago, with three VAR checks - to see if the ball went out of play, if there was a foul, and if there was an offside - all going in the hosts' favour.

Arteta was incensed by that decision, branding it "embarrassing" and "an absolute disgrace", while his team ultimately missed out on the title to Manchester City by two points.

The Spaniard insists he has moved on, but expects thoughts of the injustice - from Arsenal's point of view - to resurface in the hours before kick-off against Eddie Howe's men.

"I think the players have a memory of all the games that they play," said Arteta.

"And when there are certain situations in a specific moment, whether individual or collective, in certain grounds, you tend to recall those moments: whether you scored a goal, or you were sent off, or you won that game, the victory, the dressing room.

"You get to a stadium and you start to have things that are familiar and you relate that particular moment or that smell or the visual with something that happened to you or the team there, that's inevitable.

"Our emotional state normally is very, very good and it's very demanding.

New Manchester United manager Ruben Amorim is back in front of Sporting Lisbon fans since his Premier League move was confirmed, but not all of them were happy.

The coach first had to deal with a salty banner, but when he walked out at the stadium ahead of his side's match against Estrela, he was overwhelmingly cheered despite some boos.

Erik ten Hag has spoken.

The Dutchman was sacked by Manchester United on Monday and has already been permanently replaced, with Ruben Amorim joining from Sporting Lisbon next month.

Now, Ten Hag has spoken out on his departure in an open letter to Red Devils fans.

It reads: "Dear fans, let me start by thanking you.

I know we have a great medical department and he will work hard, so let’s see.”

Meanwhile, Adam Wharton is set to undergo surgery to fix a long-standing groin problem.

“We took the final decision he will have surgery so he won’t be available for Wolves.

“He’s really struggled the last weeks and months and so now we took the decision he will have surgery, and we hope to have him back after, let’s say, four weeks.”

Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola has congratulated Ruben Amorim after he was named the new Manchester United head coach.

The 39-year-old has penned a three-year deal at Old Trafford and will start work on Monday, November 11.

Before that, his Sporting Lisbon side face Man City next week in the Champions League.

This will be the third time Guardiola has faced Amorim after they met in the Champions League in 2022.

City won one match 5-0 and the other was a 0-0 draw.

Speaking at his pre-match press conference ahead of City's game against Bournemouth, he said: "Welcome to United and to England.

We have a lot of injuries, but it is what it is."

Jadon Sancho made a great start to life at Chelsea, with three assists in his first three Premier League games.

The England winger started four consecutive top-flight matches in a row, but was suddenly on the bench against Newcastle United last Sunday.

He remained there for the full match, and then, he wasn't in the squad for the 2-0 defeat in the Carabao Cup at St James' Park.

But Enzo Maresca has confirmed that Sancho is struggling with illness.

Speaking at his pre-match press conference before the Blues play Man United, he said: "He has been ill the past days."

But Reece James and Wesley Fofana are fit to feature.

Of course, Ange Postecoglou was asked about the new Manchester United manager, Ruben Amorim.

The Red Devils announced the 39-year-old would be Erik ten Hag's replacement earlier today, and he's signed a three-year deal.

Tottenham have been drawn to face Man United in the Carabao Cup quarter-finals, and Postecoglou is looking forward to that game and also welcoming Amorim.

Speaking first about the Carabao Cup contest, he said: "Good draw, it's a home game.

At the moment, still a chance for the weekend.

"Sonny has trained today, so if he gets through training tomorrow, he should be okay."

Now that Manchester United have confirmed the appointment of Ruben Amorim as their new head coach on a three-year deal, fans will want to know what they are going to see from Man United.

Well, it's almost certain that Amorim will deploy a back three in a 3-4-3 formation.

This is similar to what Antonio Conte and Thomas Tuchel used while they were at Chelsea.

But, of course, there are many differences.

As in all back three formations, the wing-backs are vital to both attacking and defending, with Tottenham's Pedro Porro an example of what Amorim likes from his wing-backs, so expect some new wide defenders to arrive at Man United within the next year.

The two forwards behind the striker are often narrow, getting them closer to the striker and to the goal.

In possession, it's often very patient, while out of possession, Sporting were known for aggressively trying to win the ball back or putting ten men behind in front of their goal.

Gabby Agbonlahor believes that Manchester United have found the right candidate to take the club forward in Ruben Amorim.

The Red Devils have confirmed the arrival of the 39-year-old from Sporting Lisbon.

He will be a head coach rather than a manager and has signed a three-year deal, with the option for an extra season.

And Agbonlahor revealed on talkSPORT Breakfast that he completed his coaching badges with the former Braga player.

He said: "I did my coaching badges with Amorim, and he was one of the ones that was into it.

"He had to get his badges.

"Additionally, Sporting SAD will have a benefit of Euro 1,658,000, related to the extinction of credit rights, recorded as liabilities and contingent liabilities, as a result of the revocation and renegotiation of contracts relating to intermediation commissions."

Manchester United have announced the arrival of Ruben Amorim as Erik ten Hag's replacement.

In a statement, they confirmed the the Portuguese coach had signed a three-year deal at Old Trafford, and he will start work on Monday, November 11.

This is so he can fulfill his notice period with Sporting Lisbon.

However, in the statement, the Red Devils confirm that Amorim is a 'head coach' and not a manager.

This is the first time in the club's history that United have named a head coach, and talkSPORT understands this will mean he has less transfer influence.

He will have no transfer veto and will work within the structure of the recruitment team.
