Rafa Benitez and his Liverpool reign from 2004 to 2010 was a rollercoaster of emotions, highlighted by the miraculous 2005 Champions League victory over AC Milan in Istanbul.
The Spaniard also guided the Reds to FA Cup glory in 2006 and another Champions League final appearance in 2007 – cultivating a team known for its resilience and tactical discipline.
However, his tenure was not without its challenges, as inconsistent league performances and clashes with ownership ultimately led to his departure in 2010.
Since leaving Anfield, Benitez has embarked on a diverse managerial journey, including stints at various clubs across Europe.
In a surprising move, he crossed the Merseyside divide to manage Everton in 2021, a decision he later defended by citing the passage of time since his Liverpool days and his family’s continued residence in the city.
His Everton tenure was short-lived, lasting just 22 matches before his dismissal?
More recently, Benitez found himself at the helm of Celta Vigo in Spain, but his time there came to an abrupt end in Marc 2024.
At the time of his sacking, Celta Vigo were in 17th place in La Liga, just two points above the relegation zone.
Benitez had managed to win only five of his 28 league matches in charge of the club.
And now it seems that the Spaniard is on his way to a new job according to reports.
Rafa Benitez on verge of joining Botafogo
The former Liverpool manager is close joining Brazilian side Botafogo according to the Daily Mail.
This comes 10 months after his stint at Celta Vigo.
It is reported that the Spaniard is in ‘advanced discussions’ with the Brazilian outfit and are said to be ongoing with a final decision yet to be made on the appointment.
However, the former Liverpool man is said to have ‘impressed’ higher-ups at Botafogo and is in pole position to land the role.
Portuguese coach Vasco Matos and Argentine Tato Martino are said to be among the other candidates for the role.
Botafogo is set to participate in the inaugural Club World Cup later this year.
The Brazilian club is owned by John Textor, the majority shareholder of Crystal Palace.
If Benitez does end up getting the role, he will replace Artur Jorge who left the club last month despite guiding the side to a Copa Liberatores title last year.
