Fabrizio Romano has revealed the Real Madrid request Trent Alexander-Arnold ‘immediately’ accepted.
This week, news broke that Real Madrid is in advanced negotiations to sign Liverpool’s No.66, but despite growing speculation, no official agreement has been finalized or announced.
The 26-year-old defender, whose contract expires on June 30, 2025, has become the subject of intense transfer rumors as the Spanish giants look to secure his services on a free transfer.
The Spanish club has reportedly been monitoring Alexander-Arnold for nearly two years, identifying him as a key target to strengthen their squad.
With Alexander-Arnold in the final three months of his Liverpool contract, he is legally permitted to negotiate with foreign clubs, a situation Real Madrid has sought to capitalize on.
We exclusively revealed that the biggest factor in Liverpool’s negotiations with their vice-captain was not necessarily money.
Real Madrid initially tested Liverpool’s resolve with a £20 million bid for Trent Alexander-Arnold.
While the Reds rejected that offer, the defender’s reluctance to sign a contract extension—despite receiving multiple improved proposals—has left the door open for Madrid to secure his services.
Spanish reports his week suggest that Alexander-Arnold has now signed a five-year contract at the Santiago Bernabéu, reportedly worth over £220,000 per week.
But now, speaking on the Here We Go podcast, Fabrizio Romano revealed that Real Madrid had told Trent Alexander-Arnold that he would not be getting a crazy paycheck – with Liverpool’s No.66 happy to go along with their request:
“My understanding from Real Madrid’s side is that this is not going to be a salary as one of the best-paid players at Real Madrid,” the Italian began.
“Vinicius is negotiating a new deal, Mbappe joined one year ago, Jude Bellingham is on an important contract – it’s not going to be on that part of the contract strategy at Real Madrid.”
“It’s going to be obviously a very good salary, but not a crazy salary,” the transfer journalist explained.
Romano then added that the salary offer was pretty much a non-negotiable for Real Madrid:
“This is an important point.
For Real Madrid, it was very clear since day one.
They told very clearly to Trent already when they had the first conversations – ‘if you want to join, it has to be on our terms.”
“Otherwise, you can extend at Liverpool or do whatever you want’?
Real Madrid were very clear on this point.”
“This was the message to Trent, and Trent immediately accepted.”
Trent Alexander-Arnold currently earns £180,000 per week at Liverpool, but his next contract—whether at Anfield or elsewhere—was always expected to include a salary increase.
It is standard practice for clubs to offer signing bonuses and additional incentives to free agents as part of the negotiation process, and Real Madrid will no doubt be prepared to include a sizeable lump sum to help lure the Englishman to the Bernabeu.
