When Liverpool fans think of Real Sociedad, they immediately think of Martin Zubimendi and the lengthy summer transfer saga.

Liverpool identified Zubimendi as a prime candidate to enhance their midfield.

The 25-year-old Spaniard, celebrated for his technical prowess and tactical acumen, was seen as an ideal fit for the Premier League side.

Liverpool was prepared to activate his €60 million (£51.5 million) release clause.

However, the deal took an unexpected turn when Zubimendi made a late U-turn, choosing to remain with his boyhood club

The 25-year-old Euro 2024 winner was “torn because it would have meant leaving La Real in the lurch”

Zubimendi’s loyalty to Real Sociedad prevailed, and the club decided against pursuing alternative targets, with Zubimendi’s unique skillset seemingly the only option on the market for Arne Slot and co.

Consequently, Ryan Gravenberch stepped into the defensive midfield role, delivering performances that have since reduced the urgency for a new signing in that position.

But it seems there is someone in San Sebastian who would jump at the chance to join Liverpool.

Real Sociedad man makes Liverpool admission

Real Sociedad midfielder Beñat Turriente has revealed his connection with Liverpool in a wide-ranging interview with Relevo.

Turriente has emerged as a big player for Sociedad this season having won the Olympic Gold Medal with Spain over the summer.

He has already racked up 18 appearances across all competitions including 12 in La Liga- making him a first-team regular for La Real.

Speaking on the Liverpool connection, he revealed that his father was a fan and this natrually meant the affection was passed down to him:

“Yes, special, I have always said that my father really liked Liverpool.

In fact, he was watching Xabi Alonso’s final there when he played against Milan,” he said.

“My father always played the Liverpool song for my sister and me, we always watched Liverpool games at home and it’s nice that Xabi has played there and that he has had what my father gave me since I was little.”

He also revealed that his father was a good friend of one Rafa Benítez’s assistants at Anfield – leading Turrientes to hear ‘You’ll Never Walk Alone’ while growing up:

“Because my father was from Pako Ayestarán’s group, who was once Rafa Benítez’s assistant,” Turrientes explained.

“When I was born, he explained those things to me, that he has a friend of his who is an assistant coach and as a result of that he went to see many games because he gave him tickets?

And he started playing the songs for me, playing the games and I have great affection.”

Of course, many Liverpool fans would have no doubt wished this ancedote was attached to Martin Zubimendi instead – as it surely would have made him move to Liverpool.

But at just 22-years-old, Beñat Turrientes could be a name to look out for in the coming transfer windows, and at least we know that Liverpool would be able to get him.
