The major reasons Mohamed Salah decided to reject a mouth-watering deal from Saudi Arabia and extend his contract at Liverpool have been revealed.
After several months of speculation, Salah and Liverpool delivered the news many Reds fans have been hoping for on Friday as it was confirmed that the Egyptian had signed a two-year-contract extension at the club.
Salah’s new deal will bring his stay at Liverpool to ten years.
However, despite the huge windfall, Liverpool’s offer dwarfs what Mohamed Salah could have been earning had he agreed to a move to Saudi Arabia.
According to reports, Salah was offered a £500m-a-week deal in Saudi, along with several other incentives.
However, he rejected all of those to stay at Anfield.
While his family influenced his decision to renew at Liverpool, the BBC has revealed the major reasons the 32-year-old extended his contract at the club.
Per the report, money was not a the forefront of Salah’s decision to stay at the club.
If it was, he’d have left Liverpool for the Saudi Pro League, who, until as recently as last week, still believed they could attract Salah to the Middle East,” the report said.
“Indeed, sources have told BBC Sport that Mohamed Salah was in line to earn at least £500m in Saudi – an eye-popping figure, although still short of the 1bn euros (£859m) Real Madrid forward Vinicius Jr was reportedly offered.
It was said the option of exploring a Saudi move was first raised with Salah last February – and that door will likely remain open in the future.”
“Salah’s a player at the top of his game – those close to the frontman believe he has at least another three years at the highest level,” the BBC report continued.
“Salah believes he still has more to accomplish in European football, too, starting, of course, with winning Liverpool’s 20th league title this season?
He has ambitions on winning the Ballon d’Or too, with fifth his highest placing in both 2019 and 2022.
“Salah also wants to win the Champions League again, and ensure Liverpool remain at the pinnacle of English football.”
The report also revealed that Salah’s desire to compete with elite players to “help prepare for Egypt’s forthcoming World Cup and Africa Cup of Nations campaigns,” was also a key factor in his decision to extend his deal.
