Liverpool head into the summer transfer window still in the market for a new number six.
The Reds tried to address the issue last summer and plotted a move for Real Sociedad’s Martin Zubimendi but would fail in their pursuit as the Spanish star opted to remain with the La Liga club.
The Merseyside club would have still been interested in the Euro 2024 for the 2025/26 campaign, however, the midfielder has decided to join Arsenal at the end of the season.
Ryan Gravenberch has turned his Liverpool career around this season, therefore, the need for a number six is no longer an urgent issue but it would be useful to have someone pushing the Dutch star as the 22-year-old has featured in every Premier League game for Arne Slot this season.
Frenkie de Jong has been linked to Liverpool recently and it seems that Barcelona boss Hansi Flick has decided on the future of the Dutch star.

Having arrived from Ajax in 2019, De Jong was set to have a huge career at Barcelona but that got sidetracked in recent years as the 27-year-old would suffer from injuries and lose importance to players such as Pedri and Gavi.
The Dutch talent was sidelined from April to October last year because of an ankle issue and would return to find out that he had lost his place in the starting line up
De Jong has gradually worked his way back into the fold at Barcelona and even captained the Catalan club during their 5-0 win over Valencia in the Copa del Rey on Thursday night.

With a contract expiring in 2026, Sport reports that Barcelona head coach Hansi Flick is pushing for the renewal of De Jong as the German coach is beginning to see the value in the midfielder.
It is uncertain whether the Barca board views the player in the same way as the Netherlands international could be sold at the end of the season to raise funds the La Liga giants desperately need given their financial situation.
Liverpool have been rumoured to have an interest in De Jong for some time now and this week it was reported that the Dutch star could be available for as little as £30m as the La Liga giants have earmarked the player as a potential way of raising funds.
Jose Enrique urged Liverpool to sign De Jong in the past as the Barcelona star would be a good fit at Anfield, especially since the arrival of Slot and the style of play the Reds boss has opted to play on Merseyside.
However, given the finances, it might be a deal that never happens and with the emergence of Gravenberch this season, Liverpool are likely to go down the route of bringing in a younger star to back up the Reds’ number six.
