Report: Liverpool already looked into signing 'incredible' midfielder and are now tracking him for next summer

To the disappointment of many, Liverpool ultimately ended up having a very quiet transfer window this summer.

The Reds made big changes at both head coach and recruitment level, with an expectation that a few bits and pieces would be sorted out within the playing squad, too.

Primarily, many supporters felt that Liverpool badly needed an elite central defensive midfielder who could dictate play for Arne Slot.

However, after Liverpool were thwarted in their attempts to sign Martin Zubimendi, the Reds instead went into the season with what they had.

While things have been going well so far, the expectation remains that Liverpool will continue to look for the right signing following Zubimendi’s snub.

Liverpool’s midfield has been described as a ‘masterpiece‘ during the early part of Slot’s tenure at Anfield.

The three of Alexis Mac Allister, Dominik Szoboszlai and – in particular – Ryan Gravenberch has been really good.

Curtis Jones is ready to return from injury, too, while Harvey Elliott, Wataru Endo and Tyler Morton offer rotational options as well.

However, it does still look as though Slot wants a different player to come in and be a starter.

There have already been reports that Liverpool could target Zubimendi again in January, but according to The Daily Mail, the Reds also have another target in mind.

They claim that Liverpool ‘tentatively’ looked at the possibility of signing Adam Wharton from Crystal Palace over the summer.

The deal was not designed to be done immediately, though, with Liverpool instead said to have been looking at Wharton with a view to a move next summer.

The Reds will reportedly continue to track the 20-year-old throughout the season, with Manchester City claimed to be doing the same.

As Palace showed by standing firm over letting Marc Guehi go to Newcastle this summer, they are not going to be a pushover in negotiations for Wharton.

There have been claims that Liverpool could go for Guehi next summer as well, but signing both players would mean parting with a huge amount of money.

The England international looks like a star in the making.

Palace teammate Eberechi Eze called Wharton ‘an incredible player‘ and he could be exactly what Liverpool are looking for.

Having said that, the figure may simply become too high for the Reds to sanction it.
