With just over one week to go before the January transfer window opens, Liverpool fans are starting to dream of new additions in the winter.

The Reds did not have much to get excited about in the summer market, with Federico Chiesa the only new face at Anfield.

With Arne Slot’s team going so well in the meantime, there is an even bigger appetite from Liverpool supporters to bring in some extra help during January.

Historically, the Liverpool squad has been added to with quality rather than quantity in the New Year.

And while fans wishes for another Virgil van Dijk, Philippe Coutinho or Luis Diaz may not come to anything, the Reds are supposedly putting themselves in a position to make an interesting addition nonetheless.

In terms of where Liverpool could do with extra bodies in mid-season, most would surely agree that midfield and defence are the priorities.

Another central midfielder would be mightily welcome at Anfield, while left-back has recently become a real topic of conversation, too.

However, according to French outlet Foot Mercato, Slot is targeting an addition slightly further up the pitch.

They claim that the Liverpool head coach is looking to snatch Lyon playmaker Rayan Cherki.

It’s reported that Cherki is set to experience a ‘hectic’ transfer window, as Lyon prepare to sell key players in order to raise funds.

And with the 21-year-old said to have a relatively low price-tag of £25m, Liverpool are reportedly one of two teams who are ‘hottest’ on Cherki.

The other is supposedly PSG, but with relations between Lyon and the Paris club said to be ‘frosty,’ the advantage could be with Liverpool.

And it’s claimed that the Reds are ‘pushing’ to get a deal over the line for Cherki as soon as possible in order to avoid further competition next summer.

As well as this intriguing report from Foot Mercato, the outlet’s journalist Santi Aouna also posted an update on Liverpool’s interest in Cherki on X.

“Like last summer, Rayan Cherki could experience a very hectic winter transfer window,” says Aouna.

“PSG and Liverpool are already working behind the scenes.”

Quite what that means exactly remains to be seen, but it’s certainly looks like Liverpool are genuinely keen on Cherki.

Given that the France U21 star is very much an attacking midfielder in the Harvey Elliott mould, it’s a fascinating and slightly bizarre saga for Liverpool to get involved in.

Nevertheless, Cherki is clearly a real talent and with a valuation which should not be difficult for Liverpool to reach, perhaps things are starting to align for this to get done.
