Report: Liverpool making steps to sign £25m defender who has 'no ceiling' to replace Trent Alexander-Arnold

Liverpool are pushing ahead with plans for what could be a busy summer transfer window.

The Reds have been quiet in the market over the past 18 months, leaving the to-do list to grow ahead of summer 2025.

One piece of business which is looking more and more likely to be done is the signing of a replacement for right-back Trent Alexander-Arnold.

With just four months left on his contract, Alexander-Arnold looks likely to leave Liverpool on a free transfer at the end of the season.

Having been Liverpool’s starting right-back for more or less eight years, it will be strange to have someone other than Trent parading down their right side in 2025/26.

Conor Bradley could be ready to step up and be that man.

But according to reports coming from Brazil, Liverpool have someone else in mind, too.

Although Bradley has had a good season with some brilliant moments, there are still one or two question marks over his readiness to be first choice at Liverpool.

The 21-year-old is slightly inconsistent and also has a worrying history of picking up injuries.

As a result, it will be fascinating to see which direction Liverpool go in when shopping for a new right-back.

According to Brazilian outlet UOL, the Reds are looking to Brazil for a fix.

They claim that Liverpool have made ‘the first informal approaches’ to sign Flamengo right-back Wesley.

The Reds have reportedly been watching Wesley since last year and have now made the 21-year-old a ‘strong target’ for the summer.

With Wesley expected to be called up to the Brazil national team for the March internationals, it is claimed that Flamengo could look for as much as £25m to sell their right-back.

For those supporters who do not follow Brazilian football, Wesley is likely to be a brand new name.

However, despite being just 21, the defender has been making waves at Rio de Janeiro giants Flamengo for a little while.

Since making his debut in 2021, Wesley has gone on to play 113 times for the Rubo Negro, becoming a key player over the past two campaigns.

Former Chelsea left-back Filipe Luis has been full of praise for Wesley since his arrival as Flamengo manager in 2024.

“He’s the kind of player who will decide where he wants to play come June,” Luis said after Wesley helped Fla to a Supercopa do Brasil win over Botafogo earlier in February.
