Brighton are pushing to sign Liverpool target Vitor Reis from Palmeiras, as the Reds run the risk of missing out again.

In some ways, you can understand Liverpool’s reluctance to get involved.

Their track record in South America really is disappointing.

One of those who did make the move from Brazil straight to Merseyside was goalkeeper Marcelo Pitaluga.

But having failed to live up to his clear potential in the four years since his move to Anfield, Pitaluga is in talks over a return to Brazil.

There have been high hopes at Liverpool for Pitaluga ever since his arrival in 2020.

However, the 22-year-old has failed to impress during three loan spells and is now way down the pecking order at Anfield.

Given that Pitaluga has been called ‘outstanding‘ and likened to Alisson Becker over the years, that is disappointing.

With his career clearly in need of a shot in the arm, though, Brazilian outlet UOL report that the young ‘keeper is in talks over a move back to former club Fluminense.

The Reds signed Pitaluga from the Rio de Janeiro giants and it’s claimed that the two clubs are once again ‘in negotiations’ for the goalie.

The talks are reportedly over a permanent transfer for Pitaluga, who would join Flu ahead of their new season.

In fairness to Pitaluga, Liverpool’s goalkeeping department has been excellent during his time at the club.

There was never any chance of the former Brazil U17 international usurping his compatriot Alisson as the number one, while Caoimhin Kelleher is well ahead in his development, too.

Beyond that standout pair, there are also the likes of Vitezslav Jaros and Harvey Davies as well as highly rated youngsters like Kornel Misciur.

With such a crowded Liverpool squad, it was always going to be an uphill battle for Pitaluga to adapt and make the breakthrough at Anfield.

However, it must also be said that his loan spells have not helped Marcelo’s cause.

After failed moves to Macclesfield and St Patrick’s Athletic, Pitaluga is currently at second division Scottish side Livingston where he is the team’s second choice.
