Report: Liverpool now weighing up move to sign £85m Premier League 'superstar' instead of Anthony Gordon

There was plenty of excitement on Saturday as rumours spread of Liverpool interest in Anthony Gordon.

The Reds have been reportedly looking into the possibility of signing a new forward player this summer.

And as Newcastle United raced to cover their PSR issues, it appeared that Gordon could be on the table for Liverpool.

Although Newcastle have since resolved their financial problems without resorting to selling the 23-year-old, there have been claims that Gordon has had his head turned by Liverpool.

Nevertheless, with rumours that Gordon could cost up to £100m, it looks likely that Arne Slot will have to choose an alternative.

If Liverpool had brought Gordon in when they’d had the chance, it would have felt more of an opportunistic signing than anything else.

Looking at the Liverpool squad, it’s arguable that they need a new attacker at all.

But it feels fairly straight forward that if one is brought in, then it should be a left-footer.

Slot already has Luis Diaz as first choice for the left-hand side, meanwhile Cody Gakpo has been showing during Euro 2024 why he could be worth pushing into a wider role, too.

Diogo Jota can also play from the wing while there’s even an argument that Darwin Nunez is better when not deployed centrally.

As a result, if Gordon had been brought in, one would surely have to have been sold.

According to Caught Offside though, Liverpool have ‘alternatives’ to the England man who are also left-siders.

However, they claim that the Reds haven’t given up on Gordon, either.

Liverpool are said to be ‘continuing to pursue’ the former Everton winger, with Newcastle looking for between £70-75m to sell.

With that seemingly being a little rich for Liverpool’s blood, they are also reportedly keeping three other targets in mind should things fail to progress with Gordon.

Nico Williams, Mohammed Kudus and Eberechi Ezre are claimed to be the three players on the Reds’ back-up list.

While there was a chance that Newcastle may have to sell Gordon, a transfer would arguably have made some sense for Liverpool.

But with the Magpies now sorted on that front, there’s no reason for the Reds to keep pushing.

It seems that Liverpool do like Gordon and he should probably now be a long-term target for Slot.

But with such a high price Liverpool need to get sorted in other areas first.

We really would be surprised if there’s not more to come on Gordon to Liverpool in the future.
