Liverpool could be crowned Premier League champions as early as Wednesday, with Arsenal in action against Crystal Palace.

Due to Palace’s FA Cup commitments this weekend, the Gunners are playing four days before their title rivals.

Should Arsenal win, Liverpool will have the chance to cement their own destiny at Anfield against Tottenham Hotspur on Sunday.

But if Mikel Arteta’s team lose against the Eagles, Liverpool will be crowned Premier League champions for a second time in six seasons.

A draw will leave the Reds in need of a solitary point to confirm they can no longer be caught.

With Arsenal at home, the smart money should be on the Gunners to prolong the celebrations for a little longer.

But Virgil van Dijk has confirmed that a plan is being put in place just in case.

Back in 2020, supporters will remember that Liverpool were crowned champions without even playing.

Chelsea’s 2-1 win over Man City on June 23rd confirmed that Jurgen Klopp’s team could not be caught at the top of the table.

There were still seven games left to play.

Obviously, with the coronavirus restrictions at the time, it was difficult to get a sense of normality around the celebrations.

This time, things will be different.

But just as the Liverpool squad and staff gathered to watch Chelsea beat City five years ago, The Times report that something similar is likely to happen on Wednesday.

“I expect Arsenal to win at home but, yeah, if it doesn’t happen then I think it would be nice to be together,” Van Dijk is quoted as saying.

“So however that may look, we will discuss in the next couple of days.

But if Arsenal just win that game, as they probably expect they will do against a very good Crystal Palace, then we have to do our job at the weekend.”

Although it does not really matter when and where Liverpool’s champions’ status is confirmed, most supporters would actually like to see an Arsenal win on Wednesday.

That way, the Reds will have the chance to clinch it in front of fans at Anfield this weekend.

In reality, the sooner it is done, the better.

Whatever happens on Wednesday – with Liverpool eyes on the Emirates Stadium – it is set to be a party at Anfield on Sunday.
