There’s no let up in Liverpool’s hectic calendar as attention turns towards Manchester City on Sunday.

The Reds picked up a point against Aston Villa on Wednesday night, the value of which is yet to become truly clear.

What is obvious, though, is that any more dropped points against City on Sunday, and Arsenal will start to believe they can catch Liverpool in the Premier League title race.

Ordinarily, a Liverpool trip to the Etihad would be one of the biggest deciders in who would end the season as champions.

But with City struggling, the match is not quite as gigantic this time around.

Nevertheless, the Reds have a really poor record away to Pep Guardiola’s side, with no win on City turf since 2015.

And as well as the pain of suffering a Champions League exit, City were also dealt a potential double injury blow in Madrid.

What is happening to City this season is reminiscent of Liverpool’s plight under Jurgen Klopp in 2022/23.

After years of success, too many players have been allowed to grow old all at the same time.

Obviously, injuries have played a part in that too, and in that respect there appears to be no let up for Guardiola.

Aiming to overturn a 3-2 first-leg defeat against Real, the Spaniard would have been looking to Erling Haaland to provide inspiration at the Bernabeu on Wednesday.

However, after picking up a problem against Newcastle on Saturday, Haaland remained on the bench throughout the 90 minutes.

And according to a report from the Manchester Evening News following the game, the Norwegian is now ‘doubtful’ to be passed fit in time for Liverpool’s visit on Sunday.

Haaland could reportedly be joined on the side line by John Stones, who was taken off with a problem after only eight minutes in Madrid.

Perennially injured, it is no surprise to see Stones pick up another injury ahead of Sunday’s big game.

But as good as the 30-year-old is at times, Haaland will be the player of most interest to Liverpool fans ahead of the game.

As a result, supporters will be intrigued to note Guardiola’s update on the striker straight after Wednesday’s match.

“Erling tried to train yesterday, but he hurt himself against Newcastle,” said the manager.

The plan was to try, to try to get a better result than in Manchester as long as possible.”
