Report: Whether Liverpool are really speaking to Jeremie Frimpong as Reds step up right-back search

Liverpool look likely to have a new starting right-back in place next season.

The Reds are gearing up for a busy summer, with a number of key positions set to be altered.

As Trent Alexander-Arnold prepares to join Real Madrid on a free transfer, the right side of Liverpool’s defence is one of those that will have a different look to it for 2025/26.

After eight years of Alexander-Arnold being a shoo-in, it is going to be an adjustment for Liverpool fans seeing someone else fill the role.

Conor Bradley is a strong candidate to step up and become a bona fide starter for the Reds, but the Northern Irishman is going to need competition at the very least.

It could also be that Arne Slot feels the need to bring in someone slightly more established than Bradley to be his first choice.

With that in mind, there have been plenty of rumours involving Bayer Leverkusen’s Jeremie Frimpong.

Frimpong has been one of the most eye-catching full-backs on the planet during the past two seasons.

Although he’s definitely more in the wing-back category, it is not hard to see why the Dutchman would have caught Liverpool’s attention.

With Alexander-Arnold leaving, there have already been suggestions that Slot has been on the phone to Frimpong in order to line him up as a replacement.

But according to the Liverpool ECHO, this is not the case.

They categorically state that Liverpool are not in talks with Frimpong over a move as things stand.

The 24-year-old is said to be among a number of right-backs being monitored by the Reds, but it’s claimed that talk of any negotiations being opened is ‘premature.’

Instead, Liverpool are reportedly ‘continuing to formulate their approach’ as they prepare for the strong possibility of Alexander-Arnold leaving.

Frimpong is definitely a standout contender if Liverpool do sign a right-back this summer – and it seems probable that they will.

However, given the former Man City youth-teamer is as attacking as they come, there’s a chance the Reds look to someone slightly more orthodox instead.

Newcastle’s Tino Livramento has been mentioned as a target, but it seems unlikely Liverpool would be able to get him out of St James’ Park.

Elsewhere, Feyenoord youngster Givairo Read could be a candidate after breaking through at Slot’s former club this season.

Frimpong should not be counted out just yet either, but it seems we’ll have to wait a while longer before a final decision becomes clear.
