Liverpool have reportedly been in talks with Newcastle over a deal to sign Anthony Gordon this summer.

The Reds have so far been quiet in the transfer window as they let the Copa America and Euro 2024 play out.

With Arne Slot only just getting down to work as well, Liverpool have plenty of things to sort out before finalising their summer business.

However, there was excitement on Saturday as it looked like the Reds may be starting to whir into action.

Newcastle reportedly offered Liverpool the chance to sign Gordon, with the Magpies needing to make a sale before the Premier League’s financial deadline on Sunday.

Although Gordon has the look of a player who could be a real success at Liverpool, the Reds have seemingly turned down the initial chance to sign him.

It’s claimed that Newcastle were looking to include Jarell Quansah in any deal and Liverpool were – rightfully – not prepared to sanction that.

As a result, the transfer looks to have been put on ice just for the moment.

And according to The Athletic it now looks ‘unlikely’ that Liverpool will return to sign Gordon before the profit and sustainability deadline on Sunday.

They claim that it was Newcastle who made the first approach to Liverpool over the 23-year-old, picking up the phone to the Reds based on their ‘long-standing interest’ in Gordon.

However, as well as Liverpool’s refusal to let Quansah go the other way, there are said to be two further reasons as to why a transfer no longer looks probable.

The first is reportedly the size of the fee Newcastle were asking for to let Gordon go.

Liverpool seemingly weren’t happy to pay it, regardless of Quansah’s involvement.

Reason number two is that the former Everton star is involved with England at Euro 2024.

The Three Lions play Slovakia on Sunday evening, which coincides with the PSR deadline.

If Liverpool are to make good on their long-term interest in Gordon, then this weekend feels like the best time to do it.

Newcastle being the ones to initiate the contact between the two clubs is a good sign in that respect.

Clearly, the Magpies are struggling to meet the PSR rules before Sunday’s deadline.

That should put Liverpool in a good bargaining position and could mean they can still shave some of the fee off from Gordon’s asking price.

If Newcastle are able to make another sale in the meantime though, we really don’t see Liverpool coming back in for Gordon.

There have been reports that Newcastle would want £100m for the England man and there’s no way the Reds will pay that.
