Jamie Redknapp has revealed why Richard Hughes opted for Arne Slot as Jurgen Klopp’s successor when speaking on the pitch after Liverpool clinched the Premier League title on Sunday.

The Reds thrashed Tottenham Hotspur 5-1 to secure the championship in front of their own supporters.

Arne Slot’s men had actually fallen behind against Spurs when former Liverpool striker Dominic Solanke headed home from a corner.



But they soon fought back to equalise through Luis Diaz.

And while they only needed a point to win the title, they ended up clinching the Premier League crown in style as further goals from Alexis Mac Allister, Cody Gakpo, Mohamed Salah and a Destiny Udogie own goal wrapped up an emphatic victory.

It has been a remarkable season for the Reds, who now boast a 15-point advantage over second-placed Arsenal with just four games left to play.

And it has been made even more impressive by the fact that Slot has led Liverpool to the title in only his first campaign in charge after succeeding the long-serving Klopp last summer after a trophy-laden nine years.

The Dutchman was a virtual unknown in England when named as Klopp’s successor last May, but has now become only the fifth manager to win the Premier League in their first season in England’s revamped top-flight.

And why eyebrows might have been raised following Slot’s initial appointment, former Liverpool captain Redknapp has revealed why sporting director Hughes opted to move for the Dutchman last summer.

“When you say they have no major signings, the major signing was the manager,” Redknapp said on Sky Sports after the final whistle on Sunday.

“I spoke to Richard Hughes about this and I said, ‘why Arne Slot?’
