Paul Merson has warned Liverpool that their Champions League round of 16 tie could be over by half-time if they have an off night against Paris Saint-Germain at the Parc des Princes.
That happened during their last knockout round match against the now perennial French champions, losing the first leg of their European Cup Winners Cup semi-final 3-0 in 1997 after being two goals down at half-time.
Doing so meant the ensuing 2-0 victory at Anfield was not enough even to force extra-time.
PSG also won their only other meeting in the French capital during the group stages in November 2018, when Jurgen Klopp's Reds went two goals down in the first half before losing 2-1.
Merson has now urged Arne Slot's side to do something the club has never managed previously.
"I don't see Liverpool winning at Paris Saint-Germain - they have to come back with at least a draw," Merson said in his latest column on this week's last-16 ties for Sky Sports.
We saw that with PSG in the Man City game, with four goals in the second half, and we've seen Liverpool destroy teams.
With all those players they used to have, they never looked like winning the Champions League.
"PSG can't afford to lose the first leg because the second leg, with the atmosphere at Anfield, is a different game."
They have lost both previous visits to L4, most recently thanks to a 91st-minute Roberto Firmino goal that decided a 3-2 thriller in September 2018.
